Walgreens CEO says anti-shoplifting strategy backfired: ‘When you lock things up…you don’t sell as many of them’

After reporting a 52% increase in shrink, or lost inventory, in 2020 and 2021, Walgreens invested in increased security that proved to be “largely ineffective.” And while many dr-g stores have taken to locking up commonly looted goods, Wentworth admitted, “When you lock things up…you don’t sell as many of them. We’ve kind of proven that pretty conclusively.”

Corporate already knew this. Tim is just inserting word salad in business calls to make it look like we have a strategy. We don't. Our strategy is a controlled demolition.

Tim must be a genius. He just figured out that 'When you lock things up.... you don't sell as many of them'. Duh! Anyone with a little bit of common sense should know that. What other basics do these guys Tim and Neal not know about our business?

This concept is nothing new. AP has been saying this for years…. Proven fact that when you lock 🔒 items up you lose sales. The loss of sales have a greater negative impact than the shrink if the items remain unlocked.

We need to unlock our product.

Self checkout?? Look at our tech leadership and do you think they can pull that off? Tech leadership can't even make wifi work in our office.

Even with the employee discount, I'm not willing to wait 10+ for someone to unlock the toothpastes and then take them to the counter. Horrible customer experience... Plus, why don't we have self-checkout like CVS?
