Thread regarding Walgreens layoffs

Nickel and diming workers on their way out

Writing this message to confirm Walgreens is clawing back the cash reward "bonus" we received in December for employees that are leaving prior to August 2025. The initially said it was "possible" you would have to pay this back if you left prior to August 2025 but did not think they would actually take it back, especially for analysts level employees. You would think a company would be okay giving an analyst a couple thousand but guess not.

I did not sign the contract nor take the cash reward. If I was planning to stay with Walgreens for the next year I would have taken the money. But hopefully I’m out by then! See ya

Wondering what will happen to those of us who did not sign the contract nor accept the "special cash award"... Would you like to comment, Neal?

Signs contract that says you can’t leave for a year. Leaves after a month and complains. SMH!!!!!! Wonder what type of talent Walgreens recruits these days.

Lack of ethics is not a surprise. Walgreens has paid hundreds of millions of dollars settling lawsuits and paying fines for unethical business practices.

Instead of giving us a regular bonus, the company changed it to a retention bonus. If any of exercise our right to leave this dumpster fire, we will have to give up our rightfully earned bonus. Terrible.

It’s a retention bonus. If you chose to leave what do you think was going to happen. Whole point of the bonus was to keep your butt in the seat.

It was literally in the fine print that that's what they would do, and you are surprised that they did it? Why do you think you had to sign a document to accept money?

Not a surprise, but it sure is unethical. Instead of paying us a bonus, they made it a 'special cash award' with many strings attached. We deserve a bonus payment for the work we did the past year. We shouldn't be required to stay for another year to keep this bonus. Walgreens wants to cut costs, but squeezing employees like this is not the way to do it.

Why is this a surprise? They told you that to keep the money you had to work through 8/31. They may choose to not enforce that if you are layed off, but if you choose to leave, you should expect to pay it back. Those were the stated terms.

This was our bonus, they stole our money. This was our right. I never forgive them

Re: For clarification…Congratulations on leaving Walgreens! Would not be a bit surprised to see Walgreens demand the bonus back after laying someone off. Par for the course.

For clarification - I posted this and I chose to leave on my own accord for an external opportunity. Walgreens does however reserve the right to claw back this payment even in the event of layoffs. Can't speak to if they will follow through on that or not

Are those leaving Walgreens doing so on there own accord? Absolutely can’t stand working for Walgreens but if it’s a retention bonus and you leave before the agreed date, It’s not surprising they would claw it back.

Not too surprising. The pharmacists get treated like this too with their sign on bonuses.

Message from HR Operations regarding repayment of Special Cash Reward: "Walgreens is authorized to collect this repayment via deductions from your remaining wages, including your final paycheck(s) and any payment of unused PTO and/or frozen vacation, and then any remaining amount due must be paid directly by you." They noted if PTO and your final paycheck does not cover the full cash reward amount you will then need to wire walgreens whatever is still owed.

I am sure Neal and the other executive's bonuses are safe!

Not surprising but it is sad/pathetic they are chasing people for this on their way out. I get it for higher up executives with massive bonuses but not at the analyst level.
