Thread regarding TIAA (TIAA-CREF) layoffs

Broken Promises. No Guarantees.

A year ago I was extremely happy working at TIAA despite its flaws (which all large employers have). I was excited to earn a promotion soon and genuinely enjoyed the people in my department. The future had potential.

Fast forward to now, this potential is now just a broken promise. I am being told that I must relocate to the undesirable location of Frisco, TX, or have to look for new employment with a paltry severance package while several colleagues across the firm get the blessing to be 100% virtual or at least simply don’t have to worry about upending their lives for a firm that just wants a tax incentive with no other strategic aspirations for the move.

I’d love to ask how many people in Charlotte or else where would be willing to drop their lives and move to just keep working at a firm that pulls away the carrots of promotions, tuition reimbursement, and career development to save money while touting outsourcing 1,500 employees as a success.

Idk about other departments, but this firm is in big trouble when the brain drain spigot really starts flowing in just a few short months. I can tell those of you that don’t have to relocate to remain employed here will be doing a lot more work. Very few of our processes are even documented with up to date information. That information will be in the heads of people that have been forced to move on with their lives to other pastures.

For those of you remaining at TIAA, just remember that life has no guarantees - and your workloads will go from overwhelming to insurmountable to f*** this. Meanwhile, T and her cronies are just laughing their way to the bank (and not the one sold at a substantial loss right before interest rates spiked and it was possible to make money on net interest income, but I digress).

Just remember, TIAA always will “Champion Our People.”

Oh hey! I’m in the exact same situation except for the promotion part. I have 153 days left, not that I’m counting.

“Techy Dallas suburb is No. 1 hot spot for remote workers in U.S. Even as many major companies are enacting return-to-office policies across the country, there's a stronghold in the Dallas area where remote work prevails. A new survey of cities with the biggest remote workforces has revealed Frisco is the No. 1 city with the highest share of remote workers in the nation.”

Yes… Hiring in Frisco not been great right now not only because our reputation took a huge hit but also because so many FinTech Companies in “Y’all Street”. Why go to TIAA for a paltry salary with no raises in 3 years for “higher earners”, seeing how they treated their own employees (JAX,DEN,Accenture) via the news and sites like this when prospective employees have a plethora of companies to go to in DFW and surrounding areas, some with remote options or less of a harsh 3 day office requirement.

Moving Charlotte folks will be an offer of “hey associate Abc Xyz, would you like to move?” at first then a mandatory type for some roles like it was Jacksonville and Denver. Don’t sleep on NYC office either, talk about expensive…

When Denver office opened and then Charlotte TIAA-CREF was a well known better company with a brighter future. But now … who knows. It’s more likely we will be bought out by someone else because it’s being run into the ground by leadership.

The hiring in Frisco hasn't been what we thought it would be as our reputation is not great right now. The company has to fill positions in Frisco and the Den and Jax movers are not going to cover it. It only makes sense that they will start to move people from the overcrowded Char campus.

Wait, so you’re currently working out of Charlotte and were told that you had to move to Frisco? Or are you virtual and forced to go to Frisco? Who told you this, management or HR?

I wasn't in Denver....so not a joker! The fact is in Corporate America there is no loyalty, you are expendable. Hired virtual, whole department demoted, then told move or bye bye! So I moved, just to another company! I wanted to retire from TIAA, now I see this was all a blessing.

So the brains of the organization was all in Denver?? Doesn't anyone outside of Denver believe that?

The Denver office was underperforming and overly expensive. Why would they close Charlotte or NY instead?

And until they announced the closure, every Denver employee was complaining about how dangerous and dilapidated the office was. Now suddenly it's the top office facility at the company.

You all are a bunch of jokers.

Spot on assessment.

You’re also right that the timing of selling the bank right as interest rates were rising was d-mb. That decision is ki-ling our balance sheet.

People need to save and invest as much as possible. Buy your time and get out of the corporate world. It’s hard, it’s a slog, but it can be done. Make it a goal to retire early.

Don’t let TIAA run your life. Get the paycheck and continue on. Definitely don’t move for the company. They’ll cut you 6 months later (they did that before when NY people moved to Charlotte).

Put your family first above all.

I was in the same boat...not close to a hub, told my position was going from "Virtual" to RTO in Frisco, Texas, sorry not uprooting my whole life. I decided to move on rather than wait until everyone not willing to relocate either gets let go or leaves TIAA in March after supposed bonus time. My severance would have been minimal. Not many virtual jobs in the retirement field, so I secured mine early. And, be prepared for a cut in pay, starting all over again....not fun when your hand is forced. Good luck to ALL!
