Thread regarding Morgan Stanley layoffs

How bonus is determined?

Just curious how bonus is determined in the firm. There is no transparency on this.

  1. How much should employees expect each year?
  2. Does front office like traders earn significantly more than back office like IT and OPs. How much more is fair?

Front office bonuses are closer to base. In IBD they'll often exceed base. A good associate will likely get ~10k, a good VP 20k, and then it goes up from there non-linearly. The variable compensation for back-office IT is worse than other comparable complexity jobs at similar tier companies outside of finance sell-side.
