More execs moving their offices to Austin

The ghost town off Parmer is about to get some new high dollar occupants, but first they're gonna have to build some offices befitting VPs and Div Ps. I'm sure JLL has a competent staff in place that can handle the space redesign (sarcasm).

But what's the need for a handful more execs down there when the businesses they run have no operations or employees in the area? Maybe they're following the lead of the chief sustainability officer's name plate only office there? Are they just looking to escape the MN state income tax? They'll likely telework most days anyway and just host the occasional high profile customer meeting on site.

Or maybe they just really want to take advantage of the free coffee from the robot barista.

If 3M’s leaders can be reassigned to Austin, maybe real work focused on new products and innovation will be allowed to occur in St Paul. Until then, just continue running in circles and pretending value is being created. It seems to keep leaders happy.

A few years ago there may have been 350ish total 3Mers "located" at 3M Austin. That was pre-Solventum spin and the JEPs in '23 and '24. I would bet that on any regular day there aren't 100 total people in the buildings, and 20-25% of those are contract support staff.

Only ten years left on the lease for those two buildings. And Bald Bob can't even use his phony MBB math to claim millions in savings anymore from the job eliminations.

From what I recall Austin had around 2000 employees at its peak in the early 2000s but was down to around 600 after CMD was sold. No idea what it is now.

Of course it's taxes!

I do recall a brief time when Inge as chairman "worked" - i.e. moved his office nameplate - to Austin after handing off the CEO role to Roman but not yet chairman. My friends in Austin said they never saw him once physically in the office and that was pre-wfh times (hmmm...I wonder what he indicated on his taxes that year???)

Why else would the Swede do that except for the arbitrage of state income taxes? 10% is a lot of dough, especially when you're making as much as they are for running the once great enterprise into the ground.

Any other exec moves to Austin are clearly more of the same.

There are quite a few good old boy stories from the old Austin (Four points) for the transplants to get a good laugh about. Austin used to have something like 2000 employees at 3M in the 90s.

Mighty Mack took care of that with help from Brad.

I think BB is "working" mostly as a Floridian to avoid paying what would be about 10 percent state income tax. Surprised Tireman hasn't moved. I guess he's happy to be the BMOC in Maplewood.
