41 Year Old: Skills to Learn for Job Search

What skills should a 41 year old mid-level Product manager realistically learn to be considered by another employer?

  • Have Math Degree
  • Spent 15 years here
  • Race/Gender/Preference shouldn't matter but it does - not in a favored category

Better to hire recruiter or to apply everywhere directly?

The reason everyone can tell the OP is a white male is because mediocre white men are the one's who always complain that it's "affirmative action" that's holding them back, not their own mediocrity.

I have been a PM at two F50 carriers. One skill is raw data manipulation because reports/dashboards are slow to be available and too generic. Another skill is a short term mindset because organizational change is slow and quarterly results are always coming due. A third is influence because you’ll have to cowboy around the organization to get the resources needed to impact change. Good luck!

It is quite telling that when someone says "non-protected category" without mentioning what it is, people assume "white male"!

Are you people admitting that if you are a white male, you are targeted for elimination?

THANKS!

I really feel bad for white women for having to deal with this 24/7 .

Sound like you are already a jaded lost cause. If you believe you’re discriminated against because you are a white male then nobody is going to hire you. Nobody. I’d get an attitude adjustment in a hurry. And get busy fleshing out specific accomplishments you’ve played a key role in during your 15 years. What was the situation? What was the specific result? What did you specifically do that led to success?

Be sure to complain in all your interviews about how white guys can't get a break these days. Prospective employers love that!

Interviewing skills are the biggest thing. It sounds like You have an education and experience and it’s said that finding a new job is a lot easier when you already have one.. so you got some good things going. As far as hiring a recruiter.. I think if you know a good recruiter that you can go to and trust then the recruiter is what I would recommend. Otherwise apply direct for whatever jobs fit the description of what you have experience in and start applying. Practice interviewing questions related to your field and job with someone. Reach out to others who have gone through the process recently to find out what they went through. Also reach out to old coworkers or others you know who can give you a reference to a job they are working at, if it’s a good company and they recommend working there that is. The STAR method is a popular interview process that a lot of companies are on the band wagon with. Allstate is actually one of them.. because there’s nothing like being a leader in an industry when all you do is follow the others…but really you have to start applying and interviewing and take the possibility of rejection until you find something. And despite what the naysayers tell you, when you’re out visit this site and remind yourself that it all was worth it. And remember it’s alright to feel good and it’s alright for nothing to be wrong, you got to bet on yourself because that’s your best bet.
