Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

XOM

Pretty scathing article on Exxon - good read:

What do you think? What parallels do you see with COP?

I personally don’t see as much toxicity, but definitely similar rating anxiety with minimal positive value add to actual performance.

Speaking as someone who worked at COP prior to just leaving XOM. It’s not even close, the culture at COP is night and day compared to XOMs. I could only hack it for 5 years before deciding I didn’t want to spend the rest of my career there. At least at COP bonuses are a thing, I was promoted twice at XOM and the salary increases were a slap in the face, not to mention the backstabby nature. I was there for the , now infamous, “good luck, hotshots” message and it was a real pleasure to see the impact that had on our attrition. At any rate, the grass is definitely not always greener.

I just came from XOM. I can vouch for every word in that article and plenty more. I really cannot stress how much better things are here. Certainly not perfect but a MASSIVE improvement.

If you don’t see the toxicity, it’s because you’ve become immune. It’s always there. Cop hides it slightly better, but the smiling, helpful colleagues and superiors (and they KNOW they’re superior) are always waiting and ready with a nice sharp dagger. Watch your back. I was pressured by previous managers to fudge numbers and adjust data. It’s a pyramid scheme.
