Attrition: Exxon Culture vs. Chevron Culture

Daily Mail is horse m4nur3, but this article so reminded me of CVX and the attrition trends and general decline in our company culture.

Exxon boss snapped at employees during virtual town hall and told them to 'work for Amazon' if they were unhappy - with workers scolded for not holding HANDRAILS in offices

Exxon staff will deal with the company culture to live in the Woodlands bubble with a great salary and a short commute. I doubt people are willing to risk leaving their white-picket lifestyle. I doubt the most important thing to them is to be in a rich a cultural hub with exciting outdoor terrain and diverse thought.
If you have a safe, fat and happy family in a big ol house with a pool... people will deal with the culture and ride it out.

@1ozs or the company is not going to have any competent workers left. Not many good workers want to stick through layoff after disruptive layoff and then put up with all the craziness going on. No wonder more people are unfortunately getting in more accidents at the company with upper management making change after change and constant layoffs. They blame covid for low morale and the distractions but its really mostly the mess they have put us in thats causing people to be checked out. The company needs change but not in the way it is now.

The oil and gas industry really needs to watch it when angering their talent. The industry is viewed by many and no better than the cigarette industry so treating their employees poorly is not going to help retain or attract talent.thr younger generations especially don't care for the industry. They need to check the arrogant attitudes and get real with their prospects. The blue collar areas will still be popular due to the pay but white collar workers have little to gain in this industry. Especially if the treatment is poor.

The great thing about Exxon is that the rules and boundaries are crystal clear. You always know where you stand and what is happening. There are no gray zones and no bee-ess. Totally different from CVX where everything is constantly shifting and nobody knows what is happening or what their commitment is because nobody is every held accountable.

I confirmed this story with my neighbor who works in IT at Exxon. She said the exec’s comment was two years ago. It must have taken the Daily Mail a long time to build this story.

The JG “victim mentality” comment wasn’t just to IT. It was the whole company as he talked about the layoff.

It's great that Exxon exec said this and I totally agree . If you don't like what you do or who you work for, please leave and stop eroding the joy for those of us that like our jobs and the opportunity the company has provided us. Go find what you think is better, leave those of us that are happy people alone and stop whining.

Well, they aren’t wrong. You’re free to leave anytime if you don’t like it.

RB said something similar during a MidCon townhall. If you don’t like it you can leave and find employment elsewhere. Easy for the execs to say when they’re making millions a year

Yes, I recall the famous (infamous?) call with IT where he called us victims or something to that effect. What a tool.

Me wish de do similar investigation report on cvx. JG said some far worse things in town halls leading up 2 transformation. Chev culture has more gloss than Xom but same undercurrent
