Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

GF will survive and continue to make chips

Have seen countless down cycles over the past 30+ years. GF will survive and continue to make chips. Eventually it will get sold and change control. The semiconductor industry has had a spectacular run. This was overdue. It won’t even be a bad one. GF is trimming fat by way of operating costs and labor. I’ve seen things when they were bad. When IBM, Intel and others literally used their equipment to finance operations through capital leasing to Sony and GE. Saw them come in and idle an entire fab once. I think we can all agree GF has an over abundance of directors, management, engineering, finance and marketing. It’s going to get lean but it certainly isn’t anywhere near apocalyptic.

@uox+1jQwzmNm tells it like it is.

I heard GF planning to focus on associate engineers from high school programs and community college as their front up employees to keep the cost down to run the business with current model. They will lay off mostly high paid employees to meet cost per wafer per person metric as per advice from consultants.
I am sure this approach coupled with outsourcing outside USA to cheap geo locations will be able to provide longevity to GF’s third tier bottom feeder foundry model that does not need lot of talents but competition in coming days will keep forcing GF to purge highly paid employees.
If we decide to stay in GF, let us be prepared to adopt the low cost model. My only worry is sustainability of this model when wafer orders fall in downturn cycle as this layoff story will keep repeating.
I do not see value for GF to even think of 8.2 as cost associated with extension will keep forcing GF to lay off employees to lower their cost to survive.
I am planning to leave this rotten, outdated and down place at next opportunity and suggest same for all of us. There is no growth here. There is no culture here. GF has done wrong to IBM. GF had brought wrong management practices and has all bad biased, corrupt and failed people in leadership positions.

Non-fab employees will mainly be in Bangalore, Bulgaria and Malaysia, something like 90% in those locations and 10% left at fab sites to babysit the low-cost geo new hires!!
