I know this is a forum about layoffs, but as someone who hasn't been here that long, I'm really interested in what those who have been here for a long time would say - - what were the biggest changes in the company since you started working here and when did this become almost the last place you would advise someone to look for a job?

That's exactly why it's falling apart. There's too many people that are moved into management positions, with ZERO industry experience.
Before ceo they have now, a CEO was a real railroader who started as brakeman , signal or bridge engineer , electrician, etc. They worked their way up the ranks in the rr and learned different jobs as they held various management jobs , superintendent, Vice presidents, etc,, and finally to ceo. A ceo who knows all about the rr has a wide variety of knowledge ,because of working the way up in the company . This makes for a better management style and all employees benefit from this . Just because someone has a business degree and has been ceos at other companies, won’t make them a good ceo at a rr .We don’t have enough people to do all the work now after they laid off 11,000 a few years ago due to PSR . Cameras in the trucks and locomotives, they don’t pay time claims much anymore, train trips used to be 6/7 hours now are mostly 10/12 hours, ,etc. the list goes on about how much it changed and why many won’t recommend others to work at rr. So, a few reasons why many won’t fill in the so called anonymous survey . They also not my family and not on that team.
Changes that come to mind is employee moral, we had enough employees to do the jobs. Another change is safety was 1st. Now its production 1st then slap on safety.
@jum+1 expressed it perfectly
Let's see, my health care was free, I got free boots every year, work groups got TWO paid days off for working safe per year, we had enough employees to cover territories well, and cover the jobs where someone was on vacation. I'm sure the list can go on, but yea it gets a little worse every year.
My answer for both question was that Fritz became the CEO. It really is the answer for both. I can't name anything positive that has happened at the UP since he became the CEO.
