Moving up into a management position

I believe there are many here who are trying to get into management. But how to achieve this?

What I've noticed is that those who want to become a manager for all the wrong reasons usually succeed at it. On the other hand, those who really have a growth mindset, those whose main motivation is not money but helping others and learning new skills, often fail to get a management position.

Being a TM is the WORST job in the company. In claims, regularly 60-70 hours per week with nothing to show for it.

I've interviewed several times in the past for TM positions. Here's what I kept hearing and made me rethink if I even wanted to become a TM. To paraphrase: We are not looking to see if you can do the job. We are not looking to see if you can teach your people. We are looking to see if you will be a good "fit" in our management team. THAT tells you all you need to know.

Before you think of moving to TM or up, think about your spouse and your family. Being in management often destroys family life. Be careful who you are cutting deals with. Money does not buy wealth.

@9hzf. Another lie from a liar. Notice they are entitled to say they earned it but you can't if you're one of their minions, claim sc-m, kids etc. The hypocrisy among them is oh so obvious. Nope! It's not all about me. Never has been and never will be. Good will always prevail over punks and bullies.

Remember this. At SF you absolutely have ZERO constitutional rights especially the first and second amendments. You are frowned upon if you believe in the second. Freedom of speech non existent because they will use anything you say against you. It also applies to any coworker. Best thing to do at SF is have no opinion unless you are a chosen one, get the wink and nod, fit in, a player etc. Remember SF runs their ship like China.

Management. Club members getting paid way to much to follow a consulting company and tech company narrative. And act like technocrats. And selected based on college and who you know and nepotism generally.

Be careful who you trust and ambitions

If you can’t work or have no real world experience and skill or talent you “manage” and called a leader.

Pathetic really

Everyone at this company desperately wants to be anything other than customer facing role, doesnt matter what it is, if there is a job opening and its not you being a punching bag in claims for our customers, vendors, managers...then its very difficult to get, as everyone with any shred of competence and social sway has likely been "tapped on the shoulder" and likely why an opening is even posted.

With that said, they typically like managers to get in at ILR/Express level, and the TM role there is a revolving door, much like every other job in claims.

From what ive seen in the last 5 years, the TM role is reserved for people who kinda suck at claims, but act like a kindergarden teacher, and is bubbly...or checks the boxes (you know what i mean). Skills and education within management need not apply, its not a factor or a care. Good news is if you ever want to get in above a supervisory (baby sit entry level workers) role, youll need to go through the TM song and dance, and its VERY restrictive who they let in internally. External applicants would be the best way IMO, unless you have a friend in management who can vouch.

All said, it works nothing like it should for a functional and successful company. Good luck. If you do get in at manager level, I pray you dont get a psycho SM to work for, as the TM role really can be a brutal nightmare depending on who you work under. Lets just say the comfy to work for departments dont really need to hire...

Be in a hub! Have a heart beat. You’ll beat out people with PHDs, MBAs and been in LDAs for years! Years and years of experience…being in a hub trumps all.

The hiring SM is more interested if you’d be a fun coke buddy rather than a good leader.

Management at SF are a strange breed. Very strange compared to other organizations. They do not earn their salary IMO. Their mission should be to make their weakest link the strongest in the chain. They don't! They believe the best way is to dispose of the link and buy a new one which causes the chain to be weaker at a higher cost. Peter Drucker laid this out well in his Management theories. The hurt is twofold for the company and the consumer. As parents often said to their children, I say to Management. You're getting too big for your britches.

Titles are only things made up from a man behind a desk. It never does denote the quality of the man especially at SF.

I've found that those who want to move to management are the ones on our team that don't have the ability to do the job they are currently being paid for.

If you can't do, teach. If you can't teach, get into management.

True! OP is stating the obvious. Hence, their false narrative. Maybe they should keep sniffing their beards.
