Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Can Ford build a high quality EV to sell at $25k with easy charging and 400 mile range? Should have no recalls after the sale.

Looks too good to be true. It sure is. This company can't survive for long.

Ford licensed Toyota hybrid tech way back in 2004, and it's likely obsolete by now. In 2019, Toyota did throw out 24,000 hybrid patents out for free licensing in order to stimulate hybrid vehicle sales, but I have not heard of any manufacturer taking them up on the offer. https://electrek.co/2019/04/03/toyota-opens-patents-save-hybrid-cars/

No, Ford can’t - but in their defense no one can build an inexpensive EV nowadays. Oh, Ford will crank out a few models at that price point for the first model year, then they will magically disappear. Just like Tesla and their model 3 and every other EV which drastically under estimates the real cost of these vehicles.

It is only going to get worse, too, as more EV’s are introduced. It is a lot harder and costlier to mine for rare earth metals than to drill for oil. Plus we have oil right in our own boarders, whereas not as much for the materials need to make modern batteries. Vehicle ownership will steadily decline and in 20 to 30 years it will likely be half of what it once was if the Western governments have their way with limiting or banning ICE vehicle usage. Wish I can say the future is so bright I gotta wear shades, but it seems like more of the opposite every week that goes by…

@2feg+1jGyI6y9 Few such cars include Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, Honda Civic in this price range. Very reliable and easily will last 200K miles or more.

"Ford is already licensing the tech from Toyota." Then I will buy from Toyota, why would I need Ford? Jobs have left the country, no reason to be loyal, bye.

Let's take this in portions.

  1. Can the company build a high quality EV -- Why yes they can. Lightening and mach-e are pretty darn good (High voltage junction box issue aside).
  1. Can they make it with "easy" charging -- That requires the 800V architecture. Other companies are moving to 800V. (Kia for example). Ford needs to make this transition. This is going to be important. But it is available technology. Shouldn't be too difficult.
  1. 400 mile range. -- Energy density of batteries is increasing at a pretty good rate. I'm guessing by 2025, this will be achieved, no muss, no fuss.
  1. 25k -- Now that's the rub. My guess is that small 25k vehicles will be possible in the 2025 time frame manufactured in low-cost areas (say china). Can we build a 25k ICE vehicle in the united states that is profitable? Not sure we can. I would guess that this kind of price point would be achievable in 2030 IF we greatly expand battery production in the u.s.
  1. No recalls. -- This is delusion. There are always recalls.

Why does ford have to lest hybrid tech from Toyota?? That should be the million dollar question. What has ford's R & D been doing for the last 30 years?

Reality: We are a service economy where 90% of the people serv ice the 10%. Can you buy a starter home in a safe neighborhood making $20 K/year. Until the average Joe, and Jane can afford a home and a car this country is third world. Americans have been fleeced with the exporting of industry. Yea you can get cheep stuff but if your wages are too low it comes around to bite ya. Until the politicians and our national leader represents the average person, and not the eletes we are f....... every which way a thousand times. The argument as to whether ford should develop hybrids or Ev's is mute if most of our economy is outsourced to LCC. Face the music we are not one nation under G and our Constitution is viewed as a piece of paper. The experiment is almost complete and now we know where it leads.......down down down.

Just go hybrid. Ford is already licensing the tech from Toyota.

If that is what it will take to compete say goodbye to US development jobs and UAW production jobs.

That will prove if Doug Field, Alan Clarke and the rest are competent or fakes. More than likely they're working on a possible program to achieve a low cost EV and more than likely there will be more ' involuntary separations. ' Farley has been very clear if a group can not demonstrate their value, they're done - as in fired, gone, laid off, terminated. My heart goes out to all on AV, heartbreaking that the competent ones were terminated and the id--ts that couldn't build the business viability are still at Ford. IMO FLV and Ford Next will be gone as soon as his contract expires or sooner - I had to deal with id--ts from a ' pod ' out of that group and D(umb)Ford - JF has them on his cut list, Q1 '23 going to get very brutal.

EV will only be good as a second car for at least the next 20 years. Charging infrastructure is far behind, not to mention power grid concerns. And who wants to wait up to 30 minutes to get a full 400 mile charge? My gas car can get 500+ miles after less than 5 minutes at the pump, and with a hybrid my cost is less than going EV.

Ford should go all-in on hybrid. Going all-in on EV will doom the company.

I agree. GM promised a $30k electric vehicle so I can see Farley promising more value and having his high priced new talent figure out how to do it.

I think Ford will be ok in the near term as long as we don't sc--w up next-gen F150's and we don't get hit with a deep recession.

Ford is not Tesla. If they can't build a reliable $25k-$30k EV for common folks the company doesn't need to exist. Defeats the purpose.

80% spend $25k to $30k on a new car. The other 20% will have lot of better choices in the EV space. Ford will lose lot of its customers. It will fail.
