Thread regarding 3M layoffs

3M Grades / Titles / Salaries

There are some exceptions, but for the technical functions and general management it runs like this:

Salaries are US center point numbers, total cash pay (base salary plus target bonus, not including stock options).

Percentage of bonus increases as the JG increases. It starts around 5% at T1/JG7, increases almost every JG from there.

Technicians and T-Scale Scientists/Engineers:
JG4 = Technician
JG5 = Advanced Technician
JG6 = Senior Technician
JG6A = Master Technician
JG7 = Senior Master Technician (overtime eligible)
JG7 = T1 - Chemist (or engineer or...) - 83k (not overtime eligible)
JG9 = T2 - Advanced Chemist (or...) - 100k
JG11 = T3 - Sr. Chemist - 124k
JG12 = T4 - Specialist - 143k
JG13 = T4A - Advanced Specialist - 167k
JG14 = T5 - Senior Specialist - 191k (stock options start here)
JG15 = T5A - Lead Specialist - 217k
JG16 = T6 - Division (or Staff) Scientist - 232k
JG17 = T6A - Sr. Division (or Staff) Scientist - 271k
JG18 = T7 - Corporate Scientist (This rank is also called the L3 leadership band)

Technical Manager Titles (salary is same across functions for these job grades.)
JG11 - Supervisor (rarely used in US) - 124k
JG12 - Supervisor - 143k
JG13 - Senor Supervisor - 167k
JG14 - Manager - 191k (stock options start here)
JG15 - Sr. Manager - 217k
JG16 - Director - 232k
JG17 - Sr. Director - 271k
JG18 through JG21 / L3 - Vice President - Salaries are not easily found for L3 and L2.
L2 - Division President or Sr. Vice President
L1 - Group President, Executive Vice President, or C_O - Check SEC filings for pay.

Here are the fun facts and statistics.

Let's say you are a fresh PhD , joined as a T3, and you joined 3M in the hopes of doing great science and technology. Let's say you stay in the technical track for your career in 3M. Let's do some projection for your career track.

Unless you make multiple million dollar products for the company, get credit for it and most importantly your boss and bosses boss likes you, you will end your career at the T4A level. Of course these days you are likely to get laid off after a certain age, let's say roughly 50 or so.

This is what happens to the majority of folks in the technical track. A grand total of 2 career promotions (T3 to T4 and then T4A) in a long 25 to 35 year career in 3M ( if you can still have a job that long in the first place).

Meanwhile let's see what happens if you decide to join the management track. Most people join management track after getting to a T4, after realizing that they are "management material" (i.e. not meant to work in the lab doing hands on work ) and are ready to kiss their bosses rear side at every opportunity.

Let's do a career projection here. In most cases going from a supervisor equivalent to T4) to a Technical manager (equivalent to a T5) takes 5 to 8 years. Thus in 8 to 10 years, after PhD, you are very likely to assume a position that 80 percent of technical track employees can never make in their entire career. This is almost guaranteed to happen. There is something magical or divine thing that happens once you join management track. Immediately you become "high potential". Note that this Technical Manager position also allows you the coveted stock options and RSUs.

If one is good in keeping bosses happy, then typically you can end your career at the Director level ( equivalent to T6 level). This is something that maybe 4 or 5 percent technical folks can ever dream to achieve!

Still interested in a technical career in 3M ???? Join and have fun.

When we talk about salaries we need to show 3M magic - compa-ratio. How it works? In 3M some managers have regional positions. And it looks stupid when manager with a higher JG earns less money than its Team members because he is located in the country where compa-ratio is low based on a strange calculation made by the third parties. But nobody cares…

Re: “All said and told, I would estimate there are around 1,100 people, perhaps a bit more, at 3M with director or sr. director rank under the new title structure.”

Astonishing statement. No wonder 3M Company is cratering.

A prototypical 3M division will be roughly:

1 Division President
3 - 6 Vice Presidents as division functional heads (marketing, sales, laboratory, manufacturing, etc.)
15 - 40 Directors (portfolio functional leaders, area division leaders, lawyers, division/corporate scientists)

The above group of people for a single division will usually fit in one very large conference room.

3M is roughly 20 divisions, there should be around 500 division directors in the company. BUT...
Manufacturing probably adds another 300 or so as many plant managers now hold director titles.
Corporate overhead probably is also 300.

All said and told, I would estimate there are around 1,100 people, perhaps a bit more, at 3M with director or sr. director rank under the new title structure.

With the job title realignment exercise, there was a sudden surge of directors, Sr directors, VPs, SVPs. Just look into the LinkedIn of 3M people... it is very common to see directors

How many directors does this company have? A few thousand? Haven't heard a single one being laid off but they are sure cutting the lower staff.
