Layoff amid hiring spree?

I left Glofo already, but just literally earlier this week I saw a few managers from Glofo at the SUNY Nanotech recruiting. From my friends that were still there I know my former team has just begin to refill the vacancies as well. I don't understand how come there's a layoff amid a frenzy of recruitments. Here I thought Glofo might benefit from the layoffs at Intel and get some of their expertise as well...

I think it’s telling that they are still bringing in Maint and process techs into Fab8. In fact this week our department received new cleanroom technicians from NEO. Feels like the cubes and the carpet are up in the air.

Heard employees age 50 year and above are going to be key targets and will be primary target throughout this year and next as they are equivalent to two new of less experienced employees. Idea is to create their back up and replace them with yoong and low cost employees. What the heck going on ?

Leave this place as soon as possible. I lost faith and trust in the leadership after this episode. I know GF will not care for my years and hardwork I have put in during these years. Morale in my team is so low.

Director level found out Tuesday & mid management on Thursday, supposedly. Maybe the recruiters weren’t aware yet?
Regardless, there’s an official hiring freeze. Current job offers will not be rescinded (again, supposedly) but soon to be empty positions will not be backfilled.

I doubt GF will get any good talent due to tarnished image due to multiple layoffs. I have observed some employees being let go throughout the pandemic and they were good performance employees.
