Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Another way to look at RTO

Working from home is convenient and comfortable but is it good for your career?
Your job may be more secure if you are seen working hard. Remember, perception is everything. If you are putting in your best work and few can see it, are you really safe during a recession when it's time for layoffs?
When you are at home pounding coffees and keys, you aren't going to make personal connections with colleagues. Think about the times in your past when a random connection lead to an opportunity.
Beyond all of this, it's easy to fire/layoff people when they are sight unseen. Who would know you are gone? Are there people in your group that were hired after March 2020 that you never met in person? Think about it.
My final point is this: if your job can be done from anywhere, than anyone can it do it for less money. It would be trivial for a corporation to replace you with an offshore worker. The economy is about to nosedive. This really isn't the time to be complaining about returning to the office. Now go polish your shoes and get your work clothes ready. Exciting times are waiting for you!

@7vrk+1j53NO5z Pay is part of it but location and culture are factors too. The upcoming graduates in metro Detroit may not want to work in the auto industry as their first choice.

Computer people can work in any industry.

GM is competing with Google and Meta for software people.

Of course, GM pays so low that they only get the bad programmers that Google doesn't want.

@4hjy+1j53NO5z The automotive OEMs are in some cases competing for skilled resources with non-automotive companies. The job market of the modern era may not be as restrictive to the candidate pool as it once had been.

  1. e., some people are auto lifers, some are not.

If you think you're gonna get a promotion by wandering hallways you're an id--t.

They give out promotions to whom they want with the targeted promotion gig.

If you aren't buddy buddy already no matter how hard you work, a-s you kiss, sideways glances at the urinals you have, you ain't getting it.

And why would you want to? An extra 10k bonus once a year and 50 percent more effort?

So find a better job than GM before the recession comes and you’re stuck or laid-off.

I’m going to laugh at your leverage in January.
PS Still waiting on that list of higher paying competitors who let their staff WFH.

Trying awfully hard aren't you? Still no f*cks given. We hold the leverage.

  1. "We hold all of the leverage." Actually, you can be fired and replaced tomorrow. Your co-workers will be so afraid to associate with you, they won't even mention your name. Your only leverage is 6 months of Unemployment.
  1. "heartbeats with talent. That's in short supply." Were you around during the last recession when there were hiring freezes and people were begging just to work contract? When they cut many of our paychecks by 18% and we just had to smile and endure? Talent is in NO WAY in short supply. If you weren't around, you'll learn quickly.
  1. "Why do you think they aren't forcing people back?" Didn't YOU get the memo? GM is calling us back in the first quarter of 2023. Return to office is the trend by the way. All the cool companies are doing it.
  1. "Your competition will pay more." During a recession, while mass layoffs are happening? As car sales plummet? HILARIOUS!!!
  1. I'm challenging you to list the competition that pays more and allows you to work from home. Post it here. Unless you tuck tail and concede that you are talking out of your a-s? I'm really looking forward to seeing that list.

We hold all of the leverage. Didn't you get the memo?

Every corporation the world over is looking for people with heartbeats. The desperate ones like the auto field, heartbeats with talent. That's in short supply.

They're businesses will downsize along side of the available talent. It's not rocket science. Why do you think they aren't forcing people back? Because today, is the f*ck you movement. Don't pi-s us off or we'll just quit. Your competition will pay more.

All of this posturing and hand-wringing but the fact still remains - none of you have any power to change the reality that RTO is Q1 2023. GM stock is down almost 50% this year. The company is desperate for a Hail Mary pass. The want collaboration in person and they are the ones singing your check. If their programs don’t launch without issues, all of you are in big trouble. So keep complaining your way out of a job. Deep recession is coming. You have no leverage. Suck it up.

WFH does not equal less value. Cheaper cost usually does.

Beggers can't be choosers. There's a small pool of talented individuals available in todays automotive market, and it's only going to get smaller, not larger.

Yes, we have more fence hoppers, but they can't do the work of a trained workforce. The engineering field has been trying to displace designers and engineers for 50+ years, and every single time it leads to failure. Why? Because you can't train those that exist in the stone age, to work in the rocket age. Anytime oversea counterparts learn something useful, they jump for a nickel - and then the training begins all over again with the replacement.

The time of the employer dictating anything is over.

@OP+1j53NO5z So are you saying that when the company sends jobs offshore, it's the employees fault for wanting to work remotely?

Maybe they shouldn’t have laid off so many people who spent years coming into the office at GM.

Yes. They're in Bangalore

Because GM hasn't realized years ago that they could hire offshore workers for way less... they only figured it out once people started working remotely....

Ok GM HR good one! After today's town hall where everyone stated in bold, the one word to describe a benefit of RTO as "NONE." Listen to your ppl and stop trying to recreate what other companies like Google and Tesla have done. We are GM, we are pretty cool people and here is our chance to become an example for others to follow. WFH has worked as we have launched months ahead, and have made profit numbers while maintaining impressive quality! I love working at GM, but RTO with no rhyme or reason for the 3 days or proper rollout really was a poor job.
