Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Do you still want to work at 3M?

I'm not asking about having to be here because you're close to retirement or you can't find a new job or whatever other similar reason. I'm asking if you're still at 3M because you want to be. Because you enjoy your work and are willing to ride this shitstorm out because of it. Is there anybody who feels like that?

I enjoy the knowledge gained from the job, but also have mouths to feed.

Here we all are, camping out on this site to check if we still have our jobs tomorrow. 😏

Hanging on? How do you know 3M will exist in a year or two?

Hope is not a tactic.

There's really no reason to stay at 3M if you don't have a pension (unless you're happy at 3M and believe that its best days are in front of it). You can get the same salary and benefits elsewhere without the toxic culture. A lot of 3M lifers, even those without pensions, have been brainwashed to believe that you can't work anyplace besides 3M. It's almost like a fear of going outside. I left a few years ago, but at the time it seemed like people thought other big companies have layoffs and 3M doesn't, however that is clearly not true.

I came to 3M after working at a small company that had been acquired - I wanted more stability. Obviously haven't gotten that, and most of the leadership I came here to work with and liked has left. I'm in HCBG and debating whether I feel it's worth it to ride out the crazy through the spinoff. I think the spinoff will be a good move, but getting there will 2+ years of chaos, and given there's not even a CEO named yet it's hard to have much confidence in the spin itself yet.

I have liked working at a materials science company, and some of the brands I'm on have a lot of loyalty, which is fun. My current life stage - possibility for parental leave in a year or so - makes it harder to leave. But, ultimately I am looking elsewhere also.

I'm retired as of fall 2021, but the toxic company culture cannot be blocked out every hour of every day. I remember the days of Lewis Lehr and how proud EVERYONE was to be an employee of 3M. It was a two way street back then. Hard working loyal employees supported by leadership who valued their service and gave excellent benefits.

3M had a great 1st century but the 21st century has been a steady slide not only to mediocrity but to caring more about appearance than culture and results. The decline started under the GE guy Jimmy.

I didn't work in research but is the 15% rule really even practiced in the labs anymore, or is it lip service only. Mcnerney hated that 15% culture because it went against the GE control freak style.

If I were not retired, I'd do the following:

  1. Care for the hard working employees on my team (but not for the brown nosers and ki-l or be ki---d passive aggressive types).
  1. Do my best, within reason, while on the clock out of personal pride. No more working at home on nights and weekends. It isn't rewarded.
  1. Love those close to me (do this today anyway) because they are why I worked hard in the first place to get my benefits.
  1. Forgot about ANY program of the month. Lately, it's been ESG but before that you can recall the short lived fads like paradigm shift, core competencies, six sigma, and later A3M. Just focus on what you see as adding value and let the rest of the BS flow over your back.

Ps sell your shares and move toward a lump sum pension and life is good.

I have 25 years with 3M, and in my early 50s.
I intend to sit thru the remaining few years till retirement age. Probably "Quiet Quit" while letting the younger directors take charged as they seem more motivated. Ideal also if they give me the severance package this time round.

Just barely.

Two of the primary reasons why I wanted to work at 3M were variety of industries it serviced and job security. With the HCBG spin-off and 4 straight years of layoffs, I think both of these are going out the window. Additionally our pay and benefits just seem to be getting less and less competitive. You can leave and go just about anywhere and get more vacation.

I’ll be sticking around for a while yet, but my thought of working at 3M my entire career seems less likely each day.
