Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Walmart forcing out disabled person.

I am the guardian of a developmentally disabled adult who has worked part time at Walmart for the past five years. He has a group of people providing him support and job coaching. He watches the door, stocks and helps customers and his coworkers think he's great. My friend loves his job. He is proud to go to work. Apparently, the store management is intent on pushing him out without firing him. For his career, my guy has depended on transportation provided by a group which operates from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM. My guy can't work later than that. Its been that way for years. So, the manager is insisting that he work fulltime and until 8:00 PM when he knows that's just not possible. The manager refuses to be flexible and claims this is some new scheduling change even though they always been flexible with employees in the past.

Walmart doesn't want to fire disabled workers because of past bad PR. I think they are trying to force him out without losing face. Any ideas to fight this?

Call your local news network. They eat this stuff up on slow news days. Something like "two works for you" all the news stations take these stories

Yup, Walmart will make accommodations if you handle this properly.

If you are not the legal guardian or equivalent, the associate needs to do this themselves, perhaps with help.

Walmart people services or store personnel are required to inform the associate of, and to assist with forms and process. That’s an ADA requirement.

Walmart routinely approves different types of accommodations, such as a chair for greeters and cashiers.

Associates can contact People Services at 800-421-1362

Walmart can and will make accommodations that are considered reasonable and customary to the ADA. There’s an accommodation form which the store personnel can give him. The whole accommodation packet is 5 or 6 pages, but you start with the request, then the store sends the paperwork to hone office. HO reviews the packet and a decision is made and sent back to you and the store. I believe if you are a legal guardian you can get the forms and fill them out on behalf of the associate. I’ll try to hunt up a toll free number for you to call. You’ll need the store number and the associates WIN number, but only if you are a legal guardian.
