Ford seems like they are very unfair. Depending on when you were hired in, is what you get. That pits people against each other. Drop all pensions. Offer everyone the same 401k, the same healthcare (in retirement). The same HRA and HSA accounts. That's for starters. Then in 30 years, they won't be doing this BS again when the pursestrings get tight.

healthcare, after retirement, ended in 2002. if you hired after 2002, you don't get any (unless you're high up). pension ended 2004, same thing, so add 30 years to 2004 and that will be the last year anyone will have a pension, from ford, again, unless high up.
Around 20 years ago, most large companies stopped adding new employees to their old pension plan and instead enacted the 401K model. It was true at motorola and so I don't think what Ford is doing in this regard (401K for new employees) is anything unusual.
Pension was a benefit offered to employees at timing hiring. Dropping it after someone worked for you for decades would be unfair. The way Ford has handled pensions (legacy employees keep it, new employees get 401k) is correct.
That isn’t why they r doing layoffs. That would continue no matter what.
