Why do I see so many forceful excuses for why that is? It seems like when General Motors managers want to FORCE you believe something that you really don’t.

Working hard won't save your job
We all enter this business knowing that we make above-average money but the trade off is cyclical layoffs. Like other have said on this forum, if you are worried, stay useful and busy and keep your skills sharp. Also save your money and pay down debt while you still can!
Employees at GM are happy when the people that make them look like they were slacking off for years by doing a good job get laid-off.
It is manager's job to keep employees happy and feeling secure while they do the work. This is always the case.
In other words, bury your head in the sand. That usually works out better for the people who don’t want you to look.
If you go looking for reasons that the sky is falling you’ll find them. There is no reason to believe layoffs are imminent. At the end of the day we’re all at-will employees who should keep our marketable skills sharp.
