I emailed a few former colleagues to see if they were still working. Both kicked back an I am out of the office with return dates. Were they let go?

They are on vacation, not fired.

People on vacation or leave cannot be contacted. They can contact their boss, but not the other way around. When they return or come off leave, then they will get the message - stay or go.
If it says you can't email someone, think it's like "you do not have permission to email" then they're gone.
