This is an honest question. When did you last have somebody join who had any idea what he or she was doing and cared about doing a good job? I can't remember. I don't know if it's the inability of those responsible to hire good people or it's just that only the bottom of the barrel is applying.

Melvin wants to make Lowe’s a diy store where the customer does everything. Specialists will be replaced with a kiosk that takes special orders. Everyone will be part-time except for management. Already my store has once cashier per area even on a busy day. If a cashier calls off then someone from the floor is ordered to cover for them.
Many fast food workers make more money than Lowe’s workers in California. Let that sink in. Throwing truckloads of freight in a store that rarely is cool with AC. Vs hello, may I take your order?
Then with many employers allowing work from home, you can go to white collar jobs doing customer service. Paying more than retail. There is no reason for an individual with any skills to apply to retail.
It's what lowes deserves

Literally every single new hire had the vocabulary for a rock.
"Nah"
"Bruh"
"Wut?"
We do very very little to attract quality candidates and virtually nothing to retain good associates.
That situation is becoming fewer and farther between. What i also see much of are people who show promise but quickly become disenchanted by the way the company does things. Over the years i've seen some good part timers leave because of hours being cut and paying below what other companies do.
I'm a long time cashier and I will say that several of the summer hires have an excellent work ethic, are good with customers and help out the others of us on the front end.
All of our new hire closers have figured out how to sleep in their cars while on the clock. Our parking lot has minimal lighting so no one sees them. Just a pitiful situation.
