Hi I’m graduating in Dec and have an offer to come to 3M. Wondering if I should still come, or look elsewhere? Seems there are a lot of issues.

Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you. Don't overthink it. Don't ask yourself what would others say or do. Just make the decision and move on. Change your direction in life and find the right path for yourself. And wherever you decide to go, know this. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to feel whole again.
Hey, it's a paycheck. Do it for a couple years and make your own decisions.
Appreciate all the guidance/responses. Seems I should keep looking.
Check the fortune best places to work list. If you have other offers and one of the companies made the top 100, then there's your answer. Go with them. Fortune's process is very good. They will not let companies give them a list of people to fill out the survey to prevent the bosses from only having the brown nosers participate. It has to be randomly selected.
Notice 3M is not on the list.
Also, you can tell from this website that 3M is actively laying off 1000s and has had 4 years of layoffs. Don't think you will escape the list for too many years.
I'm sure you are smart and will make an excellent employee, just by asking for advice here is a good sign. You can see that 3M has problems in sales, lawsuits, and morale. Choose wisely.
3M was absolutely the place to work if you were graduating from college back in the 1980s or 90s. Made Fortune's best place to work every single year. Happy employees. Great benefits. Stock purchase plan that made you money.
This company started its decline when it went outside to hire a wunderkind from GE who came in with forced ranking and six sigma even for research (six sigma only works in manufacturing). That was 20 years ago. While the culture didn't crash and burn right away, the company became like a hot air balloon running out of natural gas and a cold front passing by. Now it has lost steam and is falling to the ground faster than a brick.
Read up more about the earplugs lawsuit. There is a reasonable likelihood that 3M will be forced to reorganize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Then any spending, even measly raises, have to get approved by a judge.
Unless your other offer is from GE, stay clear and count your blessing if 3M does fall into chap 11
3M is not a "great" company.
Great companies put their employees first - the 3M vision statement doesn't even mention employees; neither does Roman.
Great companies establish internal process improvement teams with full buy-in from employees prior to engagement, adjust as they go, and bring goals to fruition. 3M has started dozens of initiatives that rarely get finished and are usually top down driven.
Great companies meet or exceed their financial goals (revenue and expense) even during tough economic times. 3M is failing in both respects.
Great companies do not have yearly layoffs. This year (2022) is the fourth year in a row for company-wide layoffs, including placing a wholly owned subsidiary in bankruptcy.
Great companies limit layers between CEOs and the customer. At 3M, you have a better chance of going to the moon than navigating the bloated levels of repetition management.
Great companies have leaders. 3M has an excessive amount of managers. "You manage things; you lead people." - Admiral Grace Murray Hopper
Great companies make great products. At present over 254,000 American veterans have filed individual lawsuits claiming faulty earplugs.
Great companies protect the environment. 3M just settled a $54 million lawsuit having been involved with creating a chemical that poisoned drinking water in America. Numerous overseas lawsuits for groundwater contamination are pending legal action.
If I were you, I would decline the opportunity to work at 3M. The reason- you are getting into 3M when things are not going well. The company turn around is questionable and unlikely with the current senior management team. The only thing that will "rise with the tide" are the bodies from the sale and closure of 3M.
3M is still a great company. If I were you, I would jump at the opportunity to work at 3M. The reason- you are getting into 3M when things are not going well. The company will turn around, and when it does you will rise with the tide.
Remember this wherever you end up working: do what is best for you and your family don't ki-l yourself over any corporation or position, have multiple sources of income including your own small business - never share or mention that to your managers as all companies will use it against you when the time comes, don't be stuck with one company for many years as your resume may not look attractive for potential new employers (avoid working 20+ yrs for one company and then call yourself a seasoned executive). Enjoy watching brown noses competing for extra change on their paycheck!
Do you really think this is the right audience here to ask this question?
I have more than 20 years here.
I must say that this is the worst time to join.
Even worst than 2008 GFC in my opinion
Right now the plants are having monthly shutdowns
Not good for new hires, as your annual leave will be deleted very quickly
While a utopian workplace does not exist anywhere on earth, 3M Company is not currently where I would start my post collegiate career. There are an abundance of posts on this site and others describing the appallingly stupid decisions made by the current C-Suite.
CNBC, Bloomberg, and other financial media outlets have excoriated the poor decision-making which has driven down the stock price, decimated 401K / pension plans, forced layoffs four years in a row, missed revenue forecasts in consecutive quarters, and made it apparent to any clearly thinking person that Michael F. Roman, chairman and chief executive officer of 3M, must be removed from any leadership role while there remains a modicum of hope for a 5-year recovery.
There is a cancer on 3M and it is growing exponentially. The common denominator is Roman and the entire senior “leadership” team. They’ve got to go… yesterday.
Expect frequent restructuring and disappointment if you take the job. Morale is the worst its been in my 20+ years with the company. Give the minimum it takes to not get fired. Giving your blood, sweat, and tears for the job is pointless Going above and beyond will do nothing for you in this company, and you'll still be rated "average" and given nothing more than a 1-2% annual merit increase. No incentive at all to give your all. Use 3M to get some experience under your belt if you have no other options, but try to find a job elsewhere as soon as possible. Best of luck to you!
agreed with the poster on @steal your ideas and present as their own.
Can't agree more
agreed with the poster on @steal your ideas and present as their own.
i see this very rampant especially 3M structure is set up with so many layers
If you have better offers look elsewhere. 3M not place to be. ATTITUDES reflect leadership, and morale is very negative with all of 3M job cuts. Extremely poor leadership in senior management. Blind leading the blind, no original ideas or thoughts. Extreme beauracracy and bloated management ranks that do not like to do any real work and steal your ideas to present as their own.
Even if things were good at 3M (they are not), why wouldnt you aim to start your career in tech or something that is likely to grow much faster?
Yes, you can still start your career off at 3M. Just don't believe any of the talk that you can still do 30+ years and retire at 3M. That is highly improbable in the near future.
Always keep your resume and LinkedIn up to date, and if a better job comes along don't hesitate to take it.
You are good. Just remember to kiss the right a-s
