A long discussion thread. Thoughts?

Customers don't buy because of a great PPT. They will buy if you create a reason for them to use your product or service.

Check out "The presentation secrets of Steve Jobs", by Carmine Gallo. Find inspiration in the David Olgivy's "The Theory and Practice of selling the AGA cooker"

Try to find a 3M marketing person that shows any awareness of either.

A3M, segment marketing, ppt obsession, sap, npi, and more. Sales people cant travel but we have segment marketers making $300k/yr to make slides.

Their best days are behind them , no product priced at right points, heavy costs, people , process , systems we don’t understand it inside leave alone outside, no customer intimacy , no NPIs. All competitiors have done a job to reinvent themselves or perish. Don’t cry for old days, Leave !!

We’re stuck with the current leadership team for the long term, unless they resign on there own.

The key decision makers have DEI protection. They can not be fired for performance.

Company is ran by the Show Horse group that make pretty slides and manage up. Dress nice, talk nice, do not know cr-p about how the company works. The work horses that carry the load are being slaughtered. Those that are not being laid off are running to where they get rewarded for their effort.
Agree with Advance 3M being the start of the end. The 3M secret sauce was the ability to take diverse business and find synergies to running them cheap. The country's kept this in check. Now the BGs own it all and synergies are lost.
It pains me to see the crumble of culture and pride.

HR went from being focused on employee development and retention to performance management (PIP) to weed out the so- called bad performers. Problem is once you weed out a batch, the next batch isn't nearly as bad but must be laid off to meet the quarter eps estimates.

This company made the fortune best places to work for years in the 1980s and 90s. Then the GE guy showed up with six sigma and forced ranking and the company morale began its inevitable decline.

A lot of long time 3Mers are finally seeing that the old 3M is gone forever (that is if they haven't been fired in this round)

Celebration of mediocrity
(promoting mediocre people into important roles because they are well connected) and neglect of worker bees (people who do the heavy lifting) for a very long time now.

Can someone help answer what is “right” about hiring GE rejects in leadership’s eyes? The same bunch are driving GE to the ground. check out their thelayoff.com

The answer is MR = everything he touches turns to cr-p.

Kings and Queens treat the worker bees very bad.
In the good old days, it's our company.
Now days, it's their company.

Just compare the COC team under MR watch from 2018 vs 2022 today. Half of his team has resigned . Speaks of his leadersh.i.t

What is the vision of 3M?

"At 3M, we use science to improve lives and help solve the world's toughest challenges. We remain focused on executing our plans, and continuing to deliver exceptional value for our customers and premium returns for our shareholders.”

The key item missing is any mention of the employees. Unadulterated failure! <<

It is simply poor senior management. Mike Roman is in well over his head and has no idea what to do. He is leading the charge of bad standards for leadership and no focus on actually running the business successfully. Monish is just simply cashing in until his next job shows up.

Overall greed is only a personal factor, the leadership metrics are set up for 3M to quite literally 'do better' while making less money.

Example 1: Who fu----g cares about trivial inventory numbers when there is market share to go take? - see Vale's brain-dead decision to prioritize inventory numbers over making sales.

Example 2: ISMC - let's have a lot fewer, poorly trained high-turnover sales people, then wonder why our sales aren't going anywhere. "But the channel will push 3M" has got to one of the great lies right next to "the check is in the mail".

looks like the corporation is trying to reverse back to its global reporting structure, instead of area which it created under advance 3M. Proof of the CEO short sightedness. he needs to go.

M+MM is a legacy itself. Do not need to adopt any other model to operate. Unfortunately , leaders always try to change it.
It survived 120 years for a reason.

Maybe you can change title to

What's Right with 3M? - under MR

That would be a much shorter thread

incompetence, poor management and too much internal matrices.
Instead of being close to customers and answering their challenges and needs, we are focussing on useless stuff to satisfy upper managements needs…
There is so much more to say…
