Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Dear Customers…..

What the heck is wrong with you? I’ve worked in retail over 25 years and I have never seen so much entitlement and arrogance from such incredibly demanding customers in my career. I am sorry you have to wait 10 minutes in line while an id--t holds up the line because he/she doesn’t know how to bring up a coupon. That s not MY fault. Instead of yelling at me to open more registers (ha ha no staff) tell the id--t to get out of the damn line and figure out how to use a phone or an app. You can’t access your stuff because YOU don’t know your password….too bad I’m sorry you’re stupid. I don’t owe you anything so stop being nasty and demanding to me. I’m not going to just give you $5 reward because you are stomping your feet and want it now. Stop rolling your eyes….you go to Walmart and you’ll wait 25 minutes in line EVERY time but you don’t say a word. WE are people, WE have feelings. No I do not know if we are closing, I do not know why Gustavo jumped, I can’t tell you when I’m getting coffee in, I don’t know why we aren’t paying our vendors. I don’t care about the My Pillow guy (pillow sucked btw). I just work here and I’m trying to pay my bills (yes I am looking to leave). Stop dumping all over everyone who works at BBBY. Try to have some compassion for people, respect policies, try to walk in another persons shoes, even if just for a second. Stop lying about things just to game the system. Basically just stop being an a*e to the retail workers at BBBY that really are trying to help you and do feel bad we are out of everything and wish we could solve all the problems we have. Have some courtesy and perhaps say thank you once in awhile. Kindness goes along way….try it you might find it enlightening.

You do have to watch SCO like a hawk. So many stores have had it previously and then abandoned it due to getting shrinkage like you would not believe. Depends if BBBY wants this to continue. No idea why the one person mentioned losing $10K worth of goods in a single day and why BBBY did not blink over that. Always knew the LP was lax to non existent and we used to "call" security on the overhead when something suspicious came about. Just to let them know we were watching. The LP was miles away.

Why do customers complain about self checking at BBBY but not at Wallys? Might be due to the grocery angle or the Target run business, but I have never seen anyone at Target pitch a fit over this, either. They just want to get in and get out. Maybe they are robbed of a chance to complain at cashiers. It's an entitled spoiled thing.

Absolutely right!!
Have you ever tried to do a return at Walmart?? Lines are extremely long! One return I had to do took me over 30 minutes yes I stood in line for that long and nobody bitched about how long the lines were or go to home goods to buy something lines forever and 2 cashiers checking everyone out but nobody was bi-----g. Go to Bed Bath and Beyond that’s a whole different story. I’ve been screamed at to open another register, I just shrugged my shoulders and told them there is nobody here’s to help go call 1-800-Go-Beyond and complain tell Corp they can help you. Little did the customer know they would be on hold for more than 30 minutes to talk to a real person. Not my problem

Corporate doesn't care how much abuse you take. One big reason to go somewhere else.

One SM in district threw a humidifier at a customer and hot fired, but he was not all there to begin with. This was probably 2019. Glad I did not transfer to his store. Retail is interesting and you end up wondering how many customers and supers end up at that boiling point we used to say they had other cr-p going on in their lives but hey, who doesn't? No excuse for any of this. Grocery stores have had self check forever. You know what Kroc said? Americans are too lazy to get out of their damn cars to get food! Ditto self check.

My store has the self-checkout. They took away 8 registers and leaving 2 with 4 SCO registers. People act like they've never heard of self checkout. We have 1 attendant per sift who is instructed NOT to ring unless it's cash/check/doordash transaction. People yell and scream at us and threaten to never shop there again. People ask if we're going to pay them to ring themselves up and they ALWAYS say that 'it's our job'. 2 of 3 attendants that are left in our store are threatening to quite before the new year because they can't take the entitled, rude, demand and disrespectful customers. Corporate has no idea how hard it is to take customer abuse at the front and on the sales floor.

You think customers are bad now? Just wait till your store is announced as closing and you go into liquidation. I closed 2 Sears stores. It was horrible. People were down right terrible. I've been in retail and retail management for over 30 years and never experienced anything like it. I actually had a customer throw a toaster at me and hit me on the side of the head because I wouldn't lower the price. I tried to explain to her the liquidator sets the prices, not me. I pulled out my phone to call 911 and she stomped out of the store. Crazy!

We've all been there, OP. One big problem of the stores is that you cannot vent, so feel free to do it here. It was a genuine PITA in 2020 and I am sure it's gone downhill with cranky customers. We had people who they would not call up to ring from hard side. They left him alone for 25 years as he freaked out. Not fair to other employees. Yeah, I know, another hard to believe but true story, gang.

OP here…I’m actually very good with people and do my job well…the whole point is people have become so hostile towards the front lines that some of us have taken enough abuse and are a wee bit tired of it all. But everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect yours. On a side note, today was actually a rare good day lol.

About all I can say is that Wallys has so few cashiers anymore and the only reason you would not wait 25 minutes there is because you're self checking. But I agree with nearly everything stated. Back when you had FEMs it was up to them to bring the site up on phone and keep it moving.

I will bet this felt good, too! I've been purging for stuff that happened long ago but it's all coming back by osmosis reading this!

Retail is a dying business in the future. I am glad Bed Bath Beyond soon is going’ out like Toys R US, Sears and many more. Customers always right you have heard that bull$hit from your store managers many time before right? I always think as long as there are many bonehead stupid customers keep on shopping at all retail stores. The retail company will always still get rich and abusing sale associates all day all year and all night. Welcome to Shawshank Redemption Bed Bath Beyond! There is no kind or compassion any more just nasty and greed!
