I've been looking for a new job for the past several months, sort of testing out the waters, and I'm not happy with what I'm finding. The number of jobs in our industry has gone down significantly. I've managed to get a few offers, but they are far below what I was expecting (the pay is at least 20% under what I get now). Knowing all this, I've started to be more afraid of layoffs than ever. I admit, that's new for me and I don't like the feeling one bit.

This is speaking from personal experience.
If you are a person with technical skills that are relevant, job options are still good. Tech companies in the west coast appreciate this " training" that you received in 3M. Other companies too.
If your job was " managing " other people and getting credit for their hard work, your bluff will be called out and trying to get an equivalent management position outside 3M is very difficult.
You should file a frivolous lawsuit for 'product liabiltiy' and try to leech off others hard work like these 'hero veterans'.
What a bunch of losers they are, but maybe you should try to same to get rich from doing nothing???
Reality if you are a 3m lifer at senior level - pariah principle applies.
A lot of employers are still posting jobs but aren't apparently serious about hiring. Hence the lowball offers, if you get one.
Too much uncertainty in the global economy as companies are having a much harder time passing along price increases.
Several companies have announced 5 to 10 percent layoffs too. Hang in there and conserve cash. Make sure you have a home equity LOC just in case.
Save money now while you can. It’s amazing how a savings buffer takes the worry out of potential layoffs
