Considering the state of the company, I've been trying really hard to create at least some kind of a safety net but I'm simply unable to do it. This place is keeping me hostage by paying me just enough to survive each month but not enough to build any savings that would allow me the risk of switching jobs or quitting.

You are not going to want to hear this, but......consider a second job for a while ( yes, even over 40 IF you are F.T.) so you can bank 100% of it just so you can have a cushion to then use when you need to change course or career. Yes, it will not be easy or fun but would probably be the best/quickest way.
The company is not holding you hostage. YOU are jeeping yourself hostage
At least someone is trying to save. That should be encouraged. It's difficult.
The issue you’re having is not specific to bed Bath and beyond, but rather the retail/ service industry in general.
Origin of the question is very apropos given the sneaky nature of BBBY. I'd be suspect of it.
Cannot think of much non mgmt retail that has always been paycheck to paycheck. That has been true since at least the 60s. Retail by nature is not lucrative.
If you live in California it doesn't matter how good the job or how many...you are going to be broke.
Don’t think about the future. It will be decided for you.
the company is doing this or you are?
