Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Not everybody wants to leave

I know everybody is saying to look for a new job but my goal is to stay here. I'm at the stage of my life where I'm too young to retire and too old to start again. I've been at Ford for nearly two decades. It's all I know at this point. I don't want to change that. Call me a coward, call me lazy, call me whatever you want, but I want to stay right where I am.

Everyone wants to keep their job. The issue is Ford could care less about you. You think you are secure...you are not. Ask all the people just let go that are 50+ and 20-30 yrs with the company. You can stay, just don't be complacent or expect that Ford appreciates you for all you do for them.

@OP I get it but you have to keep in mind that your years of experience likely put you in a salary range that you will be a target of layoffs with the current management. No sense in beating around the bush on that one. Cut your expenses and start saving money so you are in a good spot financially if it happens.

I have less experience but I'm also trying to hang on to my job at Ford due to parental leave that I will be taking in the next year (Ford still has a very generous policy for that).

You might want to stay, but the last 2000 people didn’t have a choice and you may not either. I would recommending preparing for a change whether or not it happens. Many that Were let go were in shock and unprepared. Fortunately, I saw it coming thanks to this site and was prepared.

@OP. I hear you! I have been a rolling stone my entire life, and I can tell you it is harder to start over again, especially as we age. However, it is not the end of the world to start fresh, especially when you are prepared for it.

You can always choose to end your employment sooner, but you are not in control, nor in a position of power, to decide unequivocally about extending your employment at FMC. That decision is in the hands of Ford's management.

Therefore, you have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Hone your skills, save money, pay your debt, check your network, prepare mentally and financially for a lay off, all while you keep receiving your paycheck at Ford.

While it is easier to find a job when employed, since you are in a relative bargaining position, you could also find a job when unemployed. Of course, all depends on the strength of your finances, and how unique/demanded are your skills.

I don't know how to tell this but simply leaving Ford will not solve problems.
The other OEMS have problems also, and the suppliers are a big roll of the dice.

The bottom line is if (when) you get fired, do you have the skill sets to find another job. Do you have the skill sets to be retained by Ford? Given, your post and lack of initiative, you may be in trouble already.
