What’s the obsession with “Quiet Quitting”

Can someone explain the obsession on this site with “Quiet Quitting”
Most people are inherently lazy these days, I still work two jobs at 53 yrs old. Why is the younger generation so lazy?

What's quite quitting? It's me working for 5 years in TAC, spending 8-12 hours a day (Paid only for 8h/day), learning as much as I could. Making sure I always had the best case notes, making sure if I saw an issue forming I'd raise a DDTS and work with the BU on it until fixed. It was our managers and their managers calling us a "Family", talking about how strong our culture was and how unflappable and indispensable our centre was as a backbone TAC.

My customers loved dealing with me and my NPI scores were always 9-10. Even when on a case with a low NPI I was normally called out by the customer as being the exception and giving them faith in Cisco.

Great yeah?

Our whole center was outsource to India. I was given 1 month's notice and a severance which amounted to $20k (Only because it was a legal requirement in my Country).

So yeah. All that time, all those missed family moments and events and the damage to my health being sedentary. For what? To give MM and Chuck a nice big fat bonus and for them to kick me to the curb. The effort I was putting in was to eventually progress through the company to a more senior technical position. All that time wasted. Just a "Human Resource".

Why should employees give any more time/money or effort to a business which is already short changing. Decisions made for financial gain of the company, flow down to staff as a debt which must be repaid. Either through stress, lower wages or extra time spent doing the job. Thanks to this American business mentality that of perpetual YOY growth, staff are being used and abused.

Work is no longer "family" to me. It's "I'm here for money", "You have me here because you have a task that needs completing". If either of those things didn't exist, there would be no contract.

If you work two jobs a day at age 53 you have failed in life

It is not leaving your job. It is saying to the company I do what you pay me for which is not working 24/7 on “critical” issues. If critical issues happen all the time our leadership should invest in the right framework to support this without burning people in the bu in the ground on every “escalation”

It happens to everyone, when someone is demotivated, there will be a drop in performance before he try getting another job, which typically takes 3 to 6 months.

Do you work two jobs in the same 8 hour time period? If so, that's way beyond quiet quitting.

Quiet quitting means giving the effort you are paid for. It must be an HR coined term, because there's no quitting involved. All it means is not going above and beyond. That seems fair enough. If you want more, pay more, or leave a ladder up.

I don't think it's laziness, the job satisfaction is probably nil and "quiet quitting" means just sliding out of it (doing less and less work until some manager eventually decides you should be fired), i.e. maximizing your employer's loss. Now you have all these "experts" explaining that it's OK to slow down for while, and then pick up the pace as if nothing happened (while staying in the same job, of course) - that is nonsense, "quiet quitting" is a form of quitting, but without giving any sort of notice.

I used to work a lot of hours and although I learned a lot, I have nothing to show for as far as pay. It did not get me anything except for a few pats on the back. Pats on back do not pay bills. Just be smart and slow down. Missing a few deadlines here and there is not going to get you fired if you put in a decent effort. Just don't put in all these long hours and give your manager the impression that more work can be dumped on you for the same pay.

Go pick up some hobbies and do something you feel passionate about outside work hours. You owe it to yourself. Have something to not regret about when at your deathbed.

“Quiet Quitting” is just some stupid term. Has nothing to do with quitting. Just people pacing themselves to not burn out. Just that some corporations are working people to death and people are being forced to quit to avoid burning out. It's about working smarter and not overworking themselves. These days, working one job is like working two jobs but getting only 1 paycheck.

Keep in mind that pay and bonuses and severance are not what it used to be like in the old days. Many of the younger generation will go into retirement without some retirement fund/pension set up. A lot of their jobs are also going overseas. Many are not lazy. Many are just trying to re-evaluate their priorities and give their time and loyalty to where it makes sense for them in the long term. Maybe if your generation had done what this generation is doing, you would not need to work two jobs.
