I went on an interview yesterday with another defense company and bombed. I am a high performer at GA and get excellent marks on all my reviews but has no idea what they were asking me at this other defense company. They were shocked I didn’t know “simple” answers and I was shocked how complicated the questions were. I never realized how outdated my skills were until the interview. Any advice on how to update skills while at GA? According to GA standards I am a top performer. According to industry standards my skills are outdated and I need training

How long have you been at GA?
I understand your point. I went to an interview talking about 1980 technology and was acting like it was state of the art… bc it is state of the art at GA but when you go to a normal company they can’t believe you are actually working on that… like coding in colbolt …. You are going to have to study on your own and fib a bit… not lie but stretch the truth a bit bc no one will hiring you know what you have been working on the 5 to ten years
Your post does not provide nearly enough information to give the sort of advice you are asking. Any person reading this in the 'defense' industry would need to know what type of skills you are talking about and needing brushing up on. What area do you currently work in? Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Programs, Purchasing, Manufacturing, etc? When you provide the proper background information then you can get specific and proper advice, if that is actually what you are aiming for. Being a high performer doesn't equate to doing well on a job interview, you have to prepare and it sounds like you didnt. Learn about the job, the company, and the skills the position requires and be ready to discuss/apply what you currently know to the position you are applying for. Your current job will not be a 1:1 match, you also have to sell yourself.
