Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Morale is in the toilet.

I don't know about your areas, but the mood and motivation to do anything in my side of the business is dismal. A lot of my coworkers are with 25+ years and extremely concerned about the layoffs, and the fact that no one knows anything like timing or areas targeted. I've updated mine and helped a few others update their resumes, and shared contact info just in case one or more of us gets the boot. I'm not as tenured, and don't have a pension, but I know there will be no logic to who gets fired, so I have to be ready too.

We're all in some hellish purgatory right now and it's miserable. I'm trying not to dwell on it and have started looking for other positions, but I'm sick thinking about the older employees who are going to really struggle if they are forced out. When I was hired, I felt like this would be a good place to stay, especially after seeing so many employees with 15+ years of service. SRD was really an eye opener, and it seems that I got a bit complacent after it died down. I recognize that now, and don't want to constantly feel like a hostage to a bean counter who can slide me off the desk.

Just want to say, I feel for all of you who are stressed the he-l out right now. Some of the slackers and deadwood definitely need to go, but as history had proven, nepotism prevails. I at least hope something happens sooner, rather than later. This purgatory we are in is a brutal existence for everyone, and it's amazing how long they'll let it go.

@1ott+1i51s3DV The problem is the slackers cost Ford real money. I’ll give you a real life example. We recently had an extended costly outage caused by two slackers. These slackers have been in their current positions for 6 and 8 years and still do not even know the basics. Neither has bothered to read a manual, process doc or take free training. Both have refused opportunities to learn.
The previous LL6 (a slacker himself) knew they were doing nothing and passed all the work to a contractor while praising the slackers. The contractor who was doing all the work retired. The current LL6 would not listen to the warnings of other GSRs that these two yahoos were totally incompetent, after all the previous LL6 sang their praises.
The two incompetent slackers caused an outage, then instead of fessing up they pointed fingers at other groups and turned off their phones, leaving a mess for others to clean up. The current LL6 was very angry when the GSRs who had to clean up the mess published what had happened to cause the outage. They received a tongue lashing for not being team players.
You can bet your bottom dollar that the competent cleanup crew will get cut and the incompetent slackers will remain.

Once individuals are promoted to LL6, then they become part of a sorority that protect their members.
There are Kingmakers in all divisions, that push for their boys or girls. Meritocracy for promotions exists but there are two tiers, those from the chosen group (FCG's) and the rest of us. Those in the chosen group need a strong Daddy/Mommy associated to the main Ford mafias UofM, MSU, India, Europe. China mafia used to be strong now is practically non-existent.
In the Engine division, managers have the discretion to offer a juicy separation package to LL6's in the early 50's and with more then 25 years at the company. Why ? because LL6 sorority look after their members. Those packages are not being offered to GSR's
In Transmission Group there are two departments FWD and RWD with mature products, there is no need to have two managers and duplicate supporting cast, however because one manager is protected for the Indian Mafia and the other is a hero from the DPS6 fiasco, both have survived with their departments just losing a handful of heads. Same scenario exists in Engine Division, but LL sorority takes cares of their own.
There are opportunities to streamline "obsolete = Ford Blue" divisions but it takes a lot of ba--s from Chief Engineers and Directors to cut LL's that are part of the "family". The level of interaction among LL's is such that they socialize just among them, it is rare to see GSR at their social groups. And even when a LL5/4 retires he/she still have direct access to Chief Engineers / Directors peddling the products of their new masters
Morale has been always in the toilet when everybody finds out this type of sorority protection letting the working bees unprotected.
Nowadays it would be better if an external consulting firm looks at the LL sorority and identifies candidates to leave. There are many LL's in their early 50's with more than 25 years at Ford and more than 10 as LL's that can leave Ford w/o affecting anything.
LL's are jobbies, they try to manage the process but as we all know those LL's are directly responsible for bad quality because their mindset is to wait for a fire to show their "Leadership (?)" skills telling GSR what to do while in fact the GSR are the one doing the work for the "glory" of the LL's
Friends of mine left Ford and joined GM, one was a buyer and the other an engineer, both got 30% salary increase.
There are ways to get rid of unnecessary LL's by given them the years to have their pension fully vested. Ford quality issues are rooted in the LL sorority, SRD supposedly was intended to weaken sorority protections but in the end it strengthened the power of LL sorority. If Fartley (pun intended) wants to get rid of slackers he needs to start from the top; Filipe, Gray, etc, all the way down in the chain of command, those LL are full responsible for bad quality by not doing their job or like in the case of Filipe to have a conflict of interest by being a member of the board of Nemak, a bad quality aluminum casting supplier.
Bad Quality during launches are directly related to the chosen suppliers where Purchasing and VP's hand pick their favorites. DPS6 was designed / manufactured by Getrag, Ford pay the price for their bad quality, WHo approved the Jo--t Venture ? Filipe, why is he still a VP after such a blunder ?

What is this obsession on this site with slackers? On every team there are natural leaders and followers. There are those that feel a personal responsibility for the work and those that just punch the clock and do the minimum. It has never been any different. The former are too busy to think much about the latter. We're not little kids doing yard work and mad at little Jimmy cause he's doing less, are we? It all seems so juvenile.

@All

I got news for you all and that is the slackers will remain, especially if the company relies more on a voluntary package. Slackers have been around since the Julius Caesar era and will be around for the next 1000. I was amazed to see who made the last round and will probably be amazed to see who survives this next round as well, if I'm still around myself.

Really, the slackers make more holes so that this giant ship which sailed for more than century will sink in the coming decade due to this industry translation. I am not surprised if a BEV Burst into flames.

@OP agree that SRD was really an eye opener. We were all shocked when our two technical experts and likely highest paid were tapped with the SRD. It had to be the d-mbest move ever made as those two did the majority of the work. If they would of tapped the 13 slackers on the team, they would of saved far more money and improved morale. Instead we have accumulated more slackers as everyone saw who Ford valued with the SRD and the morale is indeed in the toilet. If the slackers remain after this cut, I am done with Ford.

There is a slacker in our team. No one likes to work with him because he creates only problem rather than getting the work done. I don’t know who is protecting him. He missed all the layoff rounds. I hope he will be tapped this time. See, this is a great company. I want to see it beat the competition. We have unrivaled mustang, a great truck, fusion hybrid was second to only the toy..camry..we can do it better
