Certainly there are better ways to run every company. Complainers who think that this company is not run well, should perhaps sometimes give their own idea as to how they think this place would be run better. I think it would be interesting to hear those ideas.

Admittedly, I've not been with NOV for a few years but my biggest issue with the management direction was the lack of long term clarity and planning. Every decision seemed to be based on immediate stock price results which led to a failure to plan and execute on anything long term. It also led to exercises in futility that everyone knew was to show off to investors but nothing would actually come of it, usually HR related stuff. Wasting time on sizzle when there's no steak.
And everything BU Manager wrote at the beginning.

Not knowing what we are trying to achieve. Clear guidelines that reflect what the goals of the organization and the necessary input on how to attain those goals/vision. Dollars are the result and never the goal.
Key people within this organization that have influence due to their tenure, expertise, or importance to a customer are given preferences that become the priority instead of the objectives and requirements of the business goal. We allow customers to threaten our employees and revenues.
Drastic staffing cuts or inefficient changes have resulted in reduced morale, the loss of highly talented people, negative progress, and a distraction from the objective. .
Making decisions outside of the agreed-upon process that are discussed in meetings.
Lack of current state assessment or understanding it’s results
Not paying people, not promoting them, or not rewarding a successful business unit because other business units are failing.
Oh and it helps if you actually go and see an operation in action every once in a while.
