Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Listening and watching Doug is painful

Sorry, trying to give him a chance, but he comes across as very uncomfortable, and his ticks are really distracting (lip licking, other weird things he does with his lips). Any chance he could take some training on public speaking? He admitted in the Townhall to not being very polished. So fix it!

All of your points were things Mulally already implemented, were undone by the LLx. Refashioned again a few years later, then again undone by LLx

Some of the past “rules” that LLx and the friends and family contingent had heartburn with were:

  • Knowledge over Hierarchy
  • Question busy work
  • Question routine report generation
  • Meet only if you have something specific to accomplish, not out of habit
  • Do the right thing, not the easy thing
  • Share your knowledge, mentor the inexperienced

Others have said this, but it is worth repeating: Until all the LLx and the friends and family contingent are purged from Ford NOTHING WILL CHANGE. They just wait out the flavor of the month leader and then re-install the systems that they are skilled at manipulating to their advantage.

It is quite common for abusers to claim it was all in good fun / a joke.

I wouldn't say Doug publicly ridiculed Darren. Just a good natured poke. Doug has long said that we need to stop using so many Ford specific acronyms, and gave good reasons for it. I'm glad he is holding his team to the new rules. I suspect a large portion of his audience didn't know what ILVS was.

And yes, WERS is an acronym that Doug used, but its hard to avoid them when it is the name of the software.

Doug isn't perfect, but it is clear the people on this site will find a reason to whine about anyone. I'm happy to have him around, and support much of what he is trying to change including:

  • No stupid corporate PowerPoint templates. Just use what you need to make your point.
  • No prep filing presentations days in advance of a meeting.
  • Question requirements that may put us at a competitive disadvantage.
  • Don't waste time in meetings. If you aren't there to add value, don't go.
  • Let the technical experts do the talking in technical reviews, not management.

One is best to listen when people tell you who they are.
Both DF and JF show a total lack of respect for employees.
Seriously what true leader tears employees down in public?
What true leader says negative/nasty things about employees in public or even in private.
Both DF and JF have told us all in words and deeds that they are all about themselves. They are not lifting up / supporting / encouraging employees.
I guess if you want to perfect your kn--e wielding skills and BS skills one should emulate them.

Doug says lots of words, but really says very little.

I like how he publicly ridiculed a direct report for using acronyms, only to go on to use a bunch of acronyms. It was like a SNL skit!

Ge-z, how petty can you get. Doug was hired for his engineering and management experience, not his public speaking. He conveys information clearly and succinctly, so who cares if he isn't polished. We had "Hollywood" Mark Fields for a while with his salesman schtick, but I'll take Doug any day.

I see DF's relative is back on here to sing his praises. Doug is OK. If you have not seen a leader equal to him, that is not saying much for your experience.

I’d rather listen to Doug who gas much more credibility than some marketing guy who spouts empty words.

I totally disagree. Doug Field is the best leader we have at Ford at this time. And it is no coincidence that he was chosen to lead Ford's most important business platform into the digital future. That's just the leadership side, technically I have not seen an equal to him in any leadership levels.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about "ticks" like that. Particularly smart people are after all: particular. It's much more about how he leads. He has been brought on to grow the company in a specific direction. Is he doing that successfully?

I'll take smart and uncomfortable over d-mb leaders that speak the obvious and are polished. Not saying Doug is smart but we have had few leaders that "look the part" but have contributed nothing.
