Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Leaving to become a contractor to Exxon

I have seen many co workers leave and then become contractors. Many of them mid career staff. I am thinking about pursuing this.

I understand most of our contract staff come through firms but has anyone seen Exxon hire independent contractors that work for their own firm?

I have seen this done with retirees and they make pretty good money in retirement.

I understand there are tax and healthcare implications but want to know what the company’s typical process is.

In Annandale you just line up outside of DO's door to give the morning hummer and you're gold. Just ask CK. The guy is screwing the company and he's tolerated. Walks around like he owns the place. The whole of PA wing is a sh-t show. Why do we need so many that do nothing. What does B man even do?

Only regular employees are independent contractors.
At least in TX.

Company was sued and now only allows you to go through approved agencies. You can no longer setup your own LLC.

There’s contracting firms that EM uses, so you would have to go through one of them. Even if you’re 1:1000000 I think you still have to do this. No one circumvents the stup|dity of the procurement process.

@OP Why would you leave a job you hate just to come back and do it in a different form?

You’ll be just as miserable and treated just as poorly, but with even fewer protections and (maybe) slightly more pay. Doesn’t look seem a boss-move from where I’m sitting. Anyway, you do you. Good luck.

We will only hire regular employees as contractors with unique skills.

The business model is to contract through Managed Service Providers (MSP's) the skill sets of regular employees that are considered "commodity skills".

BTW, we still have many regular employees that could be replaced tomorrow with a "Managed Service Provider" at a much lower overall salary + benefit OPEX.

Was common 15 years ago, then all those annuitants were instructed to go through certain body shop agencies. Seemed that EM was overrun with annuitants that could have been perceived under some laws as employees. When the annuitants changed to agencies, the Purchase Orders were for a service and not for a named person.

My info may be a little dated, but back when I did this, XOM preferred that you go through an agency that they had already pre-approved and signed continuing service contracts with to provide workers. That way the contract terms and conditions would not have to be re-negotiated each time they wanted a new worker. I remember XOM gave me a list of the pre-approved agencies and told me to use one of them. I remember interviewing the agencies by phone on matters like pay frequency, reporting requirements, physicals, dr-g testing, benefits, etc. A rep from the agency would negotiate your specific pay rate with XOM, sparing you from that task. You could also talk to some of the contractors who are currently working there to see how well they like their agency. Each one has pros and cons.

Only thing I can tell you is that Kelly contracting typically can’t be very trusted. Poor decision making and treatment of the contractors for the Beaumont
