Ten years ago I could fully expect not to be yelled at, have profanities hurled at me, or be expected to do things that are not remotely within my duties (no, I will not babysit your child while you shop) while at work. None of that is true anymore. I don't know if the population changed overall or if we're now getting a completely different set of customers. In either case, it sucks.

Different type of customers now… shopping for low quality $5 Simply Essential junk.
To the former Hotel worker..you know things like that happen every day to thousands of people in thousands of places? Sounds like you need a non people job like many others on this board.
The quality of retail employees has gone downhill as well
The quality of customers has gone down in all of retail. Fast food also.
You reap what you SOW. I guess you could reap what you sew..then you would have a dress, shirt, etc
The “timeout” and “participation trophy” children are now unruly adults.
Quality people in general has gone down. Everyone is out for themselves and expects the world to cater to them at the same time. All the kids that were given a trophy for merely existing have grown up and now they want high wages to stand around and do nothing. You reap what you sew.
I had a hotel job where I was by myself working the shift. I had an incident where an elderly lady was bleeding (supposedly, she has this condition where she bleeds a lot) and her daughter and husband (both very grown adults) started yelling at me as to why I'm not attending to her. I was the only one on shift at the time. I grabbed bandages for her and the people at the front desk were wanting to check out and were very impatient. At the same time, there was a lady who the person on shift before me had her suitcase by the desk (beyond public access) who was also screaming at me to grab her suitcase for her because she was going to miss her flight.
I've worked other customer-facing jobs before where conditions were horrible but that one above was most memorable. So customers are awful everywhere. I quit a few days later and vowed to never work a customer-facing job again. The general public is just awful. It's not just retail. It's also hotel, restaurant, everywhere...
I was paid $13.50/hr at the time (2 years ago). Not worth it at all even if they paid me twice that amount. Customers hardly pay for anything yet they will treat you like a punching bag to take their pathetic lives' frustrations out on you. The only reassuring thing I can think of is Karma will get them sooner or later (hopefully sooner).
