Non-stop Last Minute Urgency

Just wondering why so many people reach out to schedule calls at the last minute all the time here. Like, nothing is planned or anticipated. From leadership calls to business partners who “have an urgent deadline”.. why can’t they at least reach out to schedule calls a week prior or as soon as they know the deadline dates?

I sorta get OCC, but internal Audit is also constantly ridiculous with their requests and poor planning. At what point do senior leaders push back a bit and say, “Hey, you’re putting unnecessary and unreasonable pressure on human beings!” Don’t they know we had to get 85 mid-year conversations done? How many hours do they think actually exist in a day?!? Have an interview with a fully remote company this week- so close to 15 years w/ the bank but I can’t do this anymore- their benefits are honestly not as good as they say they are- and certainly not good enough to keep me in this nightmare.

My manager once set me up in a meeting at 5:00am in the office for a Tele-Presence meeting with other team members in different time zones. I arrived around 4:45 am, but she had canceled overnight, not too long before. I didn't see it as I had gone early to bed for obvious reasons, before preparing my stuff for the next day. I had also made arrangements for a taxi since I don't have a car and I live far away from the office. When I complained, she told me that it was my fault for not having checked my email before leaving home. Not even an apology, nothing.

I played this game for 15 years at BAC, went to another company and learned I have control of my calendar and that’s completely ok. We do have some crazies but if it’s not part of the program I support…bye bye…bottom of the list! For example? if I’m in reg compliance and someone wants me to review a credit risk policy? Not my priority and not my program. Refer it to credit risk, nice to know but not part of my goals.

If someone sends me an 8:00am meeting overnight I automatically decline it.
There are more of these in the summer. The summer interns get tasks to complete documentation and surveys. If it’s not an intern from my team it gets ignored too.

Pretty easy answer. The company isn't run well. Management picks their nose until something falls on their head. Then they play chicken little and send out immediate response emails or meetings. It is amazing that a company worth billions of dollars does so little planning. It is extremely rare to find managers who are proactive.

I decine probably 50% of meetings..
Need to give me 2 days notice...most meetings happen in my situation where I tell sales people the policy and how to do it and.....they ignore it and wait weeks until its last minute...not my problem ...just decline it..

@cxm+1hzDTj7E - agree! Don't let them get away with it - just ignore it and if they need anything from you, they can follow up. I refuse to jump thru their ridiculous made-up hoops just to make their boss feel important.

Much of this is driven by power-tripping execs at the top who are CLUELESS and bully their teams.

(maybe that's why they have to spend so much on so-called Emotional Wellness programs... hmmmm) Stop the cycle!

It's a fire drill, so that next time you have an "urgent call" or "meeting" when HR is present, i.e., you are being RIFd, you'd think that it's just another nuisance and stup-d call and wouldn't think that the urgent meeting is about you being attritioned: it softens the blow and mitigate the risk of you blabbing it on your colleagues and sites such as this one.

It comes from people that don’t know the role they are doing so they need YOU to explain it correctly to get the job done.
Happens all the time.

you have the power to push back too. i have told people that I dont take last minute meeting requests when they ping me to "jump on a call". You have to let them know that you are not a last minute priority and they need to work with your schedule too.
