Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

What a crazy place to work!

I made a big mistake when I came here. I thought GF was a much better organized company. Turns out this is a big mess. I guess it wasn't so disorganized in the past?

Really astute observation @1bdt+1hnyB1gW, what is your point?

Wanna know how many bodies cycled through GF, look at new hire's badge number.

It's always been disorganized, except the "startup company" excuse doesn't apply anymore.

The truth is, in Malta at least, things only keeps going because of a fraction of its employees. 10-20% of people do 80-90% of the work, and the others just keep seats warm and milk GF. The 10% deal with it because they either get paid well, or have other issues like visas or imposter syndrome.

Every time someone leaves and posts here, they think they're the final straw and some steep decline will begin, but it hasn't proven true yet. The odd thing is that someone always rises to the occasion to fill the gaps that are created. It's incredible, and sort of like watching evolution happen. I don't know how GF manages it. I just hope people are getting paid well!

It's gotten a lot worse the past few years. Promotions now only go to the "victim class" or manager's pets and sycophants. The criteria to become a manager is the aforementioned "victim class", or if you know someone.

HR's only purpose is to server management, and to troll these websites writing fake posts, or gushing over how great GF supposedly is.

Work is steady but mundane. With the mass exodus of employees to greener pastures, a greater workload is now expected from the remaining folks.

Probably the greatest thing about the company is they pay us on time.

Don't believe any of the tripe you see on LinkedIn. Anyone who posts on that site that "they're proud, or grateful, or honored" again are the aforementioned manager's pets and sycophants.

If you do decide to join GF, try and maneuver your way into either HR or Learning & Development. You won't have to do a thing, have zero accountability, and get a promotion every year.

Abandon all hope ye who enter here.

I think it’s a fine place for a first job especially if it’s near your family

I can remember visiting GF in grad school during open house job interview in malta. The fabs were fairly new and modern. But the pitch they gave and general vibe - I remember driving down that wooded entrance road to the roundabout and thinking holy he-l I will never want to work here….. and that I will never set foot in this place again. It came across as very amateur hour. Just something felt off in all the talks and presentations from engineers and hr and admins. Weird vibe.

But fast forward few years and I was part of IBM acquisition. So forced into GF. And been looking to get out ever since. I need to start really looking to get out more seriously. Ship is sinking and there appears to be many better opportunities out there. (Which have some strings like having to move but at this point it’s worth it).

So I agree GLobalfoundries employement is a mistake.
