Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Cisco is stagnated

Forget career growth , when was the last time we heard any technical vision from upper management? Once upon a time Cisco defined the tech future of the world. Now, they just do PowerPoint politics and licensing matrices.

We are being told across the board to take 5 days of PTO before end of Q4. They cannot force you in U.K. but can suggest very forcefully.

Read the stuff about Cisco U.K. I work in U.K. totally agree. Cisco U.K. tech area is devoid of any technical vision or opportunity for techies. It’s an apocalyptic waste. The SED “leads” by marketing gimmic and endless supply of koolaid and meaningless WebEx calls titled starting with “Tech…”. No vision, no career path. As soon as you get to grade 11, start to look for a change. There is no future after that. I am handing in my papers in July.

Well said, @eqjv+1gZWvQXN.

"Just like when every company out there claims to hire only the top 10%"

Cisco used to hire the top 3% years ago. Then it went to 5, then 10%. Today very few new hires or most those in the last 10 years qualify for that. Most have the qualifications of a 3rd shift ops guy, yet are put into roles they have zero help of performing with higher salaries than long time, productive employees. That "top" 10% means we have been getting the other company cast-offs in a HUGE number. The ELT is even worse. mm was a "check boxes" hire. She is clueless as the fact pretty much all of her policies at SF aren't in place anymore and the CX collapse shows. Service sales was a large miss, yet she was celebrated and given more to control and sc--w up. May as well continue to pay millions for checking those boxes and incompetence. Fran is right there sucking the cisco teet with chuck and the rest of the woke mobs.

"when I returned and now I make $120K base, still as a grade 8 individual contributor"
Unless you are in NYC, SEA, and SFO you are totally full of it. You may have that as your total comp plan but if you aren't in those cities - BS.

Is that the difference between SJC and RTP?

Yes and also new recruit vs old timer. A fresh G10 in SJ will easily get 160K while a G10 hired in say 2010 might still be in the 130-140K range.

... as an individual contributor, grade 10... my annual base pay before taxes is $137,000.

Dude, you don't make much. Where's all the people saying they're making $200-250K at Cisco? Is that the difference between SJC and RTP?

I was a grade 9 making $95K base back in 2011 when I was LR'd. Then I was a grade 8 making $97K when I returned and now I make $120K base, still as a grade 8 individual contributor. I'd have expected better pay for a grade 10. At my age, I've reached the highest level I'm going to reach unless I get promoted to an architect or team lead, neither of which I want. I just want to sit around doing the same old sh-t for another 5 yrs and retire, or take an early retirement package between now and then.

And yet you work here

Yes, with plenty of time for myself and doing something I still enjoy doing. I don't care about career growth, it's a myth. It's made to made y'all worker bees believe that if you work very hard, you'll get a piece of the pie too. But you just won't. Look at the gigantic salary discrepancy between ELT members and a well compensated G13. It's the same rigged gig everywhere.

I work only 1.5hrs per day at Cisco as an individual contributor, grade 10.
That's 7.5hrs per week or 390hrs per year (assuming a 52-work week at 7.5hr/week).
Now, my annual base pay before taxes is $137,000. Which works out to about $351/hr.
I will quit Cisco if anyone can find a company that can beat that or even match it.
It PAYs to work at Cisco, no pun intended.

There was a time when Cisco was a technology leader. In the mid-90s, Cisco owned the routing market, acquired several ethernet switching companies to scale corporate networks, and redefined IBM networking. In the late 90s, they acquired Selsius and drove a corporate transition to IP telephony.

Of course, that was almost 25 years ago. Since then, Cisco has led the industry in powerpoint presentations.

Who cares about career growth? Y'all think you'll make it to SVP? Not going to happen. Just like when every company out there claims to hire only the top 10%. That doesn't really work, now does it? You wanna go become a nobody at AWS or Azure and work like a slave? More power to you. The only thing that matters is time. Spend it wisely, nobody comes out alive.

Cisco NEVER defined the tech future, we've always been lead by used car salesmen. The company sells and markets legacy network equipment. There's ZERO in-house product development.

Cisco acquired network equipment companies, and internally we'd sell & market those acquired products & services.

Sales & Marketing Company.... YES
Technology Company.... NO
