What's their thinking? They know about the acquisition so they must know something major is going to happen once it goes through. They must know they'll be in great danger as part of any restructuring as the last ones in. And yet they choose to join. For the life of me, I can't figure out why somebody would do something like that to themselves.

Multi millionaire part of the story seemed unbelievable but OP could’ve worked for a much smaller company and had stock. I don’t have to become a millionaire in the deal, just keep me employed
I worked at a company that got acquired by Broadcom. Many people had the same reaction as folks from VMWare. Quite a few jumped ship. For the folks that stayed, most of us are millionaires, for myself, a multi-millionaire. If you are working on a core product that is #1 in their respective area and you are a core member of the team (i.e. not a sc-m lead, program manager, schedule monkey, etc) you will be safe.
@1iuf+1hWf00JX which org are you in if you don’t mind me asking?
I am a hiring manager at VMware. We are losing a lot of external candidates at the offer stage. They are wanting assurances against layoffs that we simply can't give them. Most of the roles we are filling now are internal transfers. As other posts have suggested, the only roles being filled from external candidates seem to be from people that have been out of work for a while, or situations where VMware is a massive step up in either pay or quality of life. Attrition is high. Most of who are leaving are passionate technologists that know what's coming and want to beat the rush or people hired in the last year that fear 'last in, first out'. It's hard to watch.
I’m a new hire thar regularly visited this board to nervously check for updates and understand what I was getting into. Anyone out there who’s checking like me, know that the actual company is nothing like this place. There isn’t mass hysteria or doom and gloom all around… my past few weeks here have been a dream compared to my last role. I’m getting messages from recruiters at big tech companies since only updating my profile to working for vmware, now getting the next role won’t be hard if I were to be laid off. Everyone has different situations but the feeling of desperation only resides here.
I know it’s hard for many to comprehend, but some people can not only live within their means, but also have the house and cars paid off and fat savings. So leaving one stable job because of burnout for a VMware offer that is beyond what the other employer was paying is okay. I accepted the VMware role. Looking forward to a change. If I get laid off after the acquisition closes it’s not going to put me into much of a bind, and I’m sure I can find another job and ride out unemployment until another job is paid.
One does not have to be currently jobless or in a super bad current position as the only 2 reasons to come to VMware right now. The role they offered me is genuinely interesting to me. And yes, the pay and extras was worth it.
there was another thread here about this - vmw is apparently overpaying new people so much it would be stupid to not join and risk being laid off in a year. guess thats cool for some people
Is it safer to join big revenue-generating orgs like vsphere?
I referred a former collegue for a job at VMware that they are well qualified for and they got a rejection email the next day with no phone call or anything.
I joined VMware in May before the acquisition. Since joining, my business unit has been restructured more than a few times.. I am extremely frustrated with the situation.
Weren’t there complaints yesterday about positions not being backfilled and workload being too much? This has already been brought up and answered by people who recently accepted offers.
Most new hires don’t care about the acquisition. They don’t know nor hardly care about the good ol VMware days either. They’re more likely to listen to the managers and directors who are hiring them and saying the position is stable instead of coming to this fringe site because neither of the new hires on my team have brought up broadcom and are just happy to be here.
VMW is a good company, with good jobs, benefits, that will likely remain stable until mid-late 2023. Great offer to accept if you aren’t looking to rest and vest for a decade.
Yes, that's strange!
I'm also looking to a lot of newcomers joining in this period.
The only reasons I can think of are:
- These people are currently out of work or are working in an already difficult situation/environment in their current position and need to change anyway.
- These are coming from some unknown companies like local system integrator companies and they want to risk to have a valid name on their resume.
Would be nice to have an opinion from some of them if they read this website.
