Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

What are the safest/least safe positions?

It's a bit worrying news that Ford is laying off 8,000 people and many are rightfully wondering if we're next. One should always be prepared. I'm interested in what you think, which positions are the safest, and which could most likely become targets (in the event of cuts)?

In the previous layoffs, they've laid off some younger workers along with a lot of older workers, who were the real target, But it made the numbers look good and hid the blatant age discrimination.

But then they'd quietly contact the laid off younger workers a month later and offer to rehire them.

No such offer for the older workers.

Over 50 with big salary = walking target. They will let you go, along with a young person (who GM hired specifically for the purpose of firing them), to avoid an age discrimination lawsuit.

It’s hard to guess what jobs will be safe since it’s usually bean counters dictating numbers when cuts are done since there is always a push to do more with less. However in my opinion, if GM follows Ford’s lead, those working on things related to electric vehicles will be safer since that is the direction the company is moving.

If it’s like 2019, there are no safe positions. I was engineering and we got hit hard. The older you are, the more worried you need to be.

Historically, the most vulnerable are the contract workers. They are the first to go.
In 2019, IT was hit hard. There were people from other business functions let go but to get to the "who is safest" I suspect direct engineering/design function employees. There are scores of engineering/design boomers retiring now with few left to fill in for them. And I don't see so many new hires. Project timing is increasingly aggressive and people are overwhelmed. I have a hard time believing these people will get cut in large numbers given that the product design is literally the future of the company.
But the truth is anyone's guess.
Let's all hope that no one at GM or Stellantis gets laid off and that the good people at Ford find prosperity somewhere quick!
