EM employee here....How does ranking / performance assessment work at Oxy? Is it a forced distribution / relative ranking system similar to EM?

They normalize ratings across the business units. Otherwise one team’s manager thinks all of his staff are rock stars and all deserve big raises and promotions and another manager is old school , doesn’t promote his staff, no raises and life goes on. This happens all the time and it’s not up to the VP’s to settle it. Hopefully this procedure is in place or staff will lose out.
There is HR involvement but HR doesn’t have a say in a person’s rating.
No Hr involvement??.... Oh my. Time to tell you about the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus!
HR has no say. The recommendations are sent into the system and VPs review the ratings and then approve.
Oh my god, did someone at Oxy just trash EM. That’s hilarious.
There is ALWAYS a forced distribution at appraisal time. 15% , 70%, 15% has been HR's preferred distribution. Everyone is gunning for the top 15% of the distribution; obviously that is not realistic. Managers send in their recommendations to HR. HR "normalizes/force ranks" the employees and raises/promotions/nothing happens. Add in a little of the good ol' boy network where managers promote their pet employees up the food chain and bypass the corporate process. Life isn't fair. Good Luck!
Oxy does not force people into the lowest categories. This category is reserved for those who for various reasons have been targeted for needing improvement and their jobs are at risk. It is generally a fair system.
EM is a trash company. One of the worst reputations in the industry leave if you can.
