Lack of career advancement is really getting me down here. I've been stuck in a job with no progression for too long. This is one of the main reasons I intend to leave. I think that hardly anyone is satisfied with their career progression in this place?

Unless you are in management ranks, don't expect any meaningful advancement in your career here.
If you want to do good science and technology and also get rewarded, 3M is not the place. Alas...things have become really bad really fast over the last few years.

The other posts on this website give guidance on how to score promotions in the company very well.
Generally speaking, it might not be a bad decision to start looking for a job in a different company. Many times you can get to a similar or better job simply by switching boats.
On second note, target was even more sketchy and is going through business restructuring. Don’t go there, if you can move away from that geography.
3m is not considered as a serious employer when you would set foot in the job market. and for good reason.
Better to go to target or some such employer first in the twin cities
Promotions do take a lot of time for most folks. The picture is slightly better in other companies.
Another very influential employer in the twin cities, has 1-2 year promotion cycles. The reason is to keep the people interested in the job. It turns out since they have only three levels, once you are done with two promotions, people don’t really see a point in staying there. So they recently created a fourth level called’ distinguished’ . People still leave that company but the company at least can play a carrot and stick game for a couple of extra years.
If you have been in the game for 4-5 years without a promotion at 3m, it might be better to move to a different company. Or else you can join the supervisors as many I knew had.
The thing is that the job market right note is decent in that if you are not making any progress here, you can always easily walk out. Many folks do this for promotions, benefits or other reasons.
