I can personally attest as recent hire during the 2019 layoff and naively thought we were all safe only to be laid off....that you are indeed not safe and probably the target IF this goes down lol.

I received an automated test email the night before I was laid off in Milford in 2019, and then received an IM message from the director to meet in a room the next day. Due to a open office concept this was quite the hilarious spectacle to witness, everyone nervously working at standing desks seeing 25% of their colleagues getting called one by one to a mystery room all super visible to everyone in the whole office.

They had just hired a large group of us in the ADAS group (some moved from across the country), and they axed ~25% starting with the most recent hires with the least amount of tenure. To be fair, they did try to re-hire a portion of us sketchily after laying us off via similar positions to not cause a gap in benefits etc (age discrimination 101)....but what a yikes approach!

Agreed. In the last layoff all the recent new hires were let go. The track students survived but the track students who transitioned to their full-time roles were let go. At least that was the case in my area. But also the low performer long timets.

If the company needs a large reduction in the number of employees, preferably their elder employees, all ages will be eliminated (laid off; eg, 2019) to avoid an age discrimination law suit. More likely, the company would offer a special early retirement incentive package for their elder employees to leave, avoiding the loss of their younger employees.

When they laid off people in 2019, the former employees were given a stack of paper with each positions cut in their area and the age of the person in that job. They have to lay off they young if they lay off the old.

Layoffs. That's such a Detroit 3 thing.

Best to find and employer that can't lay you off. Think chip shortages, only more important.

Recent grads are relatively safe. I have been at previous companies where they were let go as collateral damage. You can’t just exclusively let go all of the old people with high salaries without a lawsuit.

No one is totally safe, but people who work cheap, like new college hires and h1bs, are far safer than others.

The older you are or the more you make, the more likely you are to get laid off.

Nope - Seen them go in the last round so gm could say there wasn’t age discrimination. Wouldnt worry about it if you are a good employee and get along well with your boss
