Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Changing of the Outdated Guard

So it seems SG (Upstream N.A.) is retiring this year (or early next year) noting years cap……who goes behind him? And, JJ (Upstream Czar) is almost certainly retiring next year given he is about a year older than MW and there is a need to stagger their respective departures by a few years…..who goes behind him? And will JJ (the elder) finally retire - he was supposed to leave and has been kept on for some special project?? MW has less than 4 years left before the age cap and likely the BOD has him hand over the keys a year before the cap as a contingency should the succession plan blow up last minute……. So who goes behind him? How do the dominos fall with these moves and others over next 1-3 years (e.g. JP of Bus. Dev. who has been in that seat forever - not healthy for the company for anyone to be in the same executive job “forever”)? One thing is certain, the average “looooong” tenure of our executives as listed on the Chevron leadership page is depressing but has gotten a little better with AW, EB and JG now up there. However, our tendency is to put folks into the top exec jobs and leave them there - or shuffle them around for 10-15 years “blocking” other talent from rising up into those jobs……that has to change, and there needs to be some real diversity of thinking and leadership “types” moving into the top ranks to make change in this company (not just replacing with folks who are “like their predecessors”, “Yes men/women”, “never rocked the boat people”)…..will MW have the audacity to “rock the boat” and surprise us all with how he shuffles the deck over the next several years - both his direct reports and the next level down??? How do you see some of the dominos and how would you like to see things shake out with who you would like to see moving up? Who are the folks that would really and truly help transform this company for the better??? We don’t need the status quo incremental B.S. of carrying the same old torch the same old way……..!

I hope it is EB. She is smart, tough and fair. Also would be great for CVX to lead the way with a female CEO that would also have the credentials for the job not just be a token placement.

If it is PB behind MW, then does seem JG moves from his green washing gig to CFO…..he has the same personality and approachability as PB so it makes a lot of sense :) as neither relate well with the individual worker……will be interesting to see then who goes behind JG in the go green gig and actually gets something done (or not)……

@3mnz+1gpLic31; very interesting and quite plausible (if not likely) scenarios. Who goes behind EB and AW if they both move here shortly when JJ retires (assuming announcement is coming in Q3/Q4 for next year retirement)……..both EB and AW just moved into those jobs……..whomever moves behind EB may retire in that job but whomever moves into AW’s job is likely being groomed for the next job thereafter.

PB all the way if MW doesn't stay till 65, but most likely EB or NH. So when JJ leaves, one of them will go to upstream & the other could go to Downstream if MN were to leave that spot early (vice chair participation trophy?). BN & AW to the Upstream region presidents (SG & NH's spots), with AW potentially getting Upstream after EB or NH ascend to CEO. JG the younger to CFO eventually

JG would be a terrible choice as he is a bully and a know it all. Let's hope he gets downgraded!! His Colorado roots and MW Colorado roots should be looked into and would not be surprised that there is a connection!

Chevron could do a LOT worse than AW as the pick. He would be my choice.

CEO is chosen to serve up to 10 years ending at age 65. MW steps down in 2-3 years so current candidates need to be EVP now and currently under age 55, pref female and/or of color. A.W. (VP Corp Affairs and upstreamer) is about the only candidate. JG and EP need more experience.

JG cannot be it. All of those comments about how passive aggressive he is are very accurate. J is an empire building yes-man. MCBU is shooting fish in a barrel. Maybe they’ll pick PB instead.

MW seems to be in a bit of a pickle on succession plan…..it has always been clear who was next way ahead of time, not so much this time. Many say JG but that dude has zero interpersonal skills and puckers upward constantly while backhanding downwards and sideways constantly. Super passive aggressive and very political on his positioning……worked near him in mcbu and a few of my buddies worked for him in cbu and it was all a show with that guy……But MW picked him to be head of low carbon job so apparently MW likes him a looooot…….

All 3 of them - EB, AW, JG - are high probability successors to the throne and the heads of Up and Mid streams. The question is how will the scenarios play out b/c the wildcard is NH in Upstream. It may be the case he goes into JJs job for 3 ish years and then succeeds MW. In that scenario, JG goes behind PB in Finance, EB behind JJ in Upstream and AW behind CP in Midstream. My money is on AW going behind SG and EB behind NH as the next 2 Opco Heads. JG just moved into the low carbon business - new energy - and can’t see who in Finance goes behind PB with JG being a Finance guy with BU experience (as PB did with CBU and ASBU).

Hmmm…..EB hasn’t run a BU yet (Upstream, Downstream or Midstream)…..she rocketed up to her current position through a very large Director Job in TCO, but she didn’t run the BU (JB did and now DM). Can’t see how EB moves behind MW next or JJ. Maybe SG to set up that potential in the future though? JG (jr) has run 2 BUs. AW ran 2 Upstream BUs and the Pipeline BU so has a further leg up than the other 2 on BUs run. But when have you seen the head of C.A. Move into JJ or MW’s jobs? This is a bit of a mystery now that you mention it…..PB for a short tenure or MN? CP??

MW is a 'company man' and will not 'rock the boat'. Your three listed 'new blood' are just more cookie-cutter Chevron privileged managers. I go back to DO'R, and the only thing that has changed in the C-suite are the names. Game-changers? They go elsewhere to be impact players. The Chevron Management Factory does not turn out game-changers, only yes-persons.
