Exxon Ban on LGBTQ Pride Flag Triggers Employee Backlash

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-04-22/exxon-triggers-employee-backlash-with-rainbow-pride-flag-ban

“The updated flag protocol is intended to clarify the use of the ExxonMobil branded company flag and not intended to diminish our commitment to diversity and support for employee resource groups,” Tracey Gunnlaugsson, vice president of human resources, said in a statement. “We’re committed to keeping an open, honest, and inclusive workplace for all of our employees, and we’re saddened that any employee would think otherwise.”

The hypocritical layers of the ExxonMobil managment have been coming down one by one since last couples years. Another hypocritical layer has been exposed now.

Busy postings, though not much related to layoffs.
More about the soul of the company these days.

The only righteous flag for EM to fly is the Jolly Roger.
roundly.

Just a reminder: the 'B' stands for bi.
Executives are people too, they say.
Hypocrites are people too.

Naah.

I was surprised by the numbers:

Exxon’s Pride employee resource group has existed since 2008 and currently has 3,000 members globally. Exxon’s worldwide workforce is about 63,000.

There is probably many more contractors as well

This escalated quickly. 1000s of views, dozens of comments within an hour or two.

We are passionate about this.

I'm confused why a statement was necessary. The corporation's actions have been clear since 2020. If it's not about the share price XOM doesn't care.

Sorry 1% lgbt, but the other 99% just want to be the best we can be without all your distractions. No one cares or wants to know what you do behind closed doors. And yes, I am gen x and my generation thinks the same way I do. Millennials are the boomers to us.

To me, it pretty much is a nonissue. I probably will not notice.

This could have been a non-issue like it is in most companies. The fact that senior leadership made a conscious decision to take a step backwards on supporting LGBTQ inclusion by banning rainbow flags shows how out of touch they are.

If you don’t like it … maybe Disney is hiring?

I would assume that the digital Pride displays in the coffee bar areas will occur still(?). We’ve had womens history, black history, AMENA, and I believe Asian-Pacific Islander displays so far this year.

Just cleaning up the campus. A persons se-ual preference has no place at work. It is way past time for this decision.

Pride flag is not a political statement. It’s a show of support. And if MC can’t step up and choose a side, then they’ve already chosen one.

Political flags should be BANNED, just like XOM already bans political bumper stickers and political buttons. only US flag, Texas flag...plus official flags of various countries where we have business can be displayed (not flown).

So we can be proactive in supporting Ukraine but should stay neutral in supporting our own LGBT employees. Thank you for creating clarity on where this company really stands. LD should be removed from the sponsor role.

So often lately I look at decisions made by upper management and think: Now what you should've done here was nothing.

Publicly traded corporations should refrain from flying special interest flags. Not a difficult concept. I’m all for inclusion and diversity, and there are better ways to advocate for your cause that can actually enact change.

Finally the company put their foot down on this nonsense and we can get back to the powerhouse we were in 2006!
