What would motivate them to treat us better?

Unfortunately it is only by more and more people quitting is what will force UP as a company to change and treat employees better.

Does anyone else think that higher attrition rates can motivate UP to treat the remaining employees little better? Unfortunately I still think that there is no such thing that would convince leaders to value their employees more.

I think the worst thing for the executives is having to live with the knowledge that they were all duped by Hunter Harrison, and that they all followed him like the pied piper down the rabbit ho-e of greed. Yes, they were financially rewarded, but money doesn’t buy contentment, especially when others had to suffer unjustly to acquire it.

I totally agree with this post, but one fact was left out here. If and when the executives actually start feeling the pain from the damage they caused, will they still be employed at the UP? I'll bet some of them are going to jump ship real soon. So really what pain would they feel if the STB intervention kicked into overdrive? The CEO is at or very close to retirement age, so what would stop him from just retiring and walking away? The folks that are still employed by the class 1's have been feeling the pain the whole time like someone posted earlier. What recognition has been given to them? These are the people that worked through Covid, made the billions for the shareholders and executives, and were under a constant threat of termination or furlough. It's no surprise anymore why people aren't applying or going back to the UP. What needs to happen is to have the executives held accountable. Let's put their retirements chopping block, and let's see how many favorable improvements take place.

We are now witnessing the beginning of a proper and much needed and overdue rebalancing of interests that have come about due to the abuse of stakeholders. The pendulum has swayed much too far toward the interests of shareholders only, and has accelerated due to greed. This has created a stain on an industry that is important for the economic well being and national security of all Americans, and will take a long time to reverse. It is unfortunate that it has taken government intervention to begin the process. The faithful rank and file employees who have stayed the course during this long and painful period, and performed their duties while being lied to, and abused by management, deserve the credit for leaving enough of a foundation to build on for future generations. Without them, we all know that greed would have done even greater and more lasting damage. Railroad executives who perpetuated this thing known as “precision scheduled railroading” will now have to live with the destructive legacy it has created.

When it costs UP leaders more money to mistreat employees than it does to treat them w/ decency, then they will change. The following cannot be changed by someone like a Lance Fritz nor a Larry Fink, they too will answer to the living God most high. Some change when they see the light, some change when they feel the heat.

Employees sticking together of course. That’s how our dads generation made so much money on the Railroad they stuck together and knew how to fight. Most of the current employees are letting the company violate agreements and take money away from us riding out what the last generations fought so hard for. Pretty sad when truck drivers make more than Locomotive Engineers.

It will take some time for exec to feel the pressure of people quitting, can’t fill the jobs , and the new requirements of the STB supervision , before we see any real improvements. Also don’t forget that many industries served Up freight service , are suing Up for all the delays and poor service.
