Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Internal job board would be cool.

You could get an idea of wide rang of job types and maybe see where you want to aim your career.

Would be good to have a specific goal or ideal job to work towards. This could establish more self ownership of one's future.

Or not. I have friends at other companies and if they don’t find their next job they are fired. There are always trade offs. Try finding another job when there is a big downturn.

Job Postings would reduce the ability of Management to fill positions with unqualified sponsored persons.

UNACCEPTABLE

This would ruin the internal chess game that upper managers and HR play with YOUR career. Your interests, in my experience, are not really represented by your representative. Management and HR know best.

If you really want to have fun, decline the lateral or "new" job and watch them panic. Ruins their best laid plans and makes them react. Might impact your career though...

Mobil did post jobs and it was fantastic.

Used to work at a certain other major which had an internal job board. It was free to search by any employee. You could look all the way from noob level to probably director level. I think higher spots where on there also but were restricted until you reached a certain level.

It had a job description and requirements for the position. It also had examples of qualifying past roles. The job role owner was even listed so you could speak to the person and see how you might fit or see what working for that person could be like.

Was very nice to envision for yourself long term goals and determine your own development opportunities to get where you wanted to go.

As an experienced hire at xom I've been here almost 4 years and still don't know what my next assignment could even remotely look like. I just concentrate on building a network in the meantime.

It makes no sense that is posting mid career jobs on LI when there are qualified people internally.

Posting jobs on internal boards would mean that the company would have to acknowledge you wanted that position. Then they would have to tell you no and maybe even possibly give you a reason. They couldn’t ghost internal candidates the way they ghost external candidates. None of this would be seen as advantageous by the lawyers who really run the corporation.

It would be the best possible HR move from my perspective though.

Steward your own career to some degree.
That's crazy talk.

Sorry, a job board would eliminate 500 useless jobs tied to staffing. Can’t have someone’s fiefdom taken away.

I’ve been asking for decades. I totally agree it would be great to have. I can see what jobs are out there and I could get myself prepared for openings out there I am interested. Unfortunately this company doesn’t work like that. The best you have is to go out there and start asking teams what they do and say you are interested. You can at least get the ball rolling - unofficially.

Our staffing and development advisor told us to ask to see what jobs were lined up for. Supervisor - Nope! It’s comical how poorly HR is run in this company.
