Seriously what is going on with AIG HR these days! Many of us received letters about Cobra to then receive an email to say the Cobra letter was sent in error. So AIG spent money to mail letters in error?!? Come on the heels of the most disastrous comp cycle I have experienced in my 20+ years of working at multiple companies.

My best guess is that you were on a possible layoff list due to the connection to WC, and the likelihood that there will not be future business. The way that this could have happened is that the layoffs for the people on this list were either delayed or cancelled, and the information was not relayed to the 3rd party admin, who sent out the Cobra letter.
I got one, i am in workers comp staff counsel and I in the last year did indeed add a dependent so maybe that theory above is true. I have been vaccinated so that theory is not true. I am under the claims side of the tier and we are outsourcing all the work comp cases to GB but we have been told we would still be staff counsel. who knows at this point. no raises and didn't even get my STI up to point this year (first year of decrease) i know they are trying to please their shareholders.
Think of it this way. A third party admin has your name and others on a list to send a Cobra letter. How did this happen?
To the last poster, I kinda see what you’re saying in that it doesn’t matter what’s written in bold in the letter but rather the fact that only “certain” people received this letter and in your mind, that must mean something? Like you said, no one should be on this distribution list at all unless, again, like you said, preparatory. Thanks for your perspective!
In my letter, it says in bold, “There has not been a change in your status with your company. You are receiving this notice because you recently added a plan or dependent.”
The problem is no one should be on any cobra list at all. Cobra is for after you've been let go and removed from the normal company sponsored healthplan.
It is prepatory - it's an added plan. Your own.
I know it was a real error. How you ask, because I would love a RIF package and I am not that lucky.
In my letter, it says in bold, “There has not been a change in your status with your company. You are receiving this notice because you recently added a plan or dependent.” For me, I did neither. I don’t know maybe I shouldn’t get my hopes up and just conclude this might’ve been sent in error?
AIG has no incentive to retrain people. Their stock increases every time there is a layoff.
Does that group work for Accenture? Maybe they will just get other work to do.
It depends on what group you are affiliated with. If you are part of GI ops servicing Workers Comp, it will probably be this summer, since those claims are predominately being transferred to GB.
I had a colleague where he screwed up, his badge worked and they let him upstairs but his phone and computer would not. His manager has to call him to let him know and he was walked out
Let’s say the cobra letter was sent out prematurely to those on a RIF list, does anyone have a sense of when the RIF will happen? Would it be in the coming weeks? 3rd or 4th quarter?
Well said.. I'd add a few points on AIGs Disney like indoctrination but don't want this post to be censored
AIG has no regard for its employees. They will overwork you, RIF you, outsource you, offshore you, sell you, under-value you without thinking twice. They simply do not care anymore. Once a great organization has descended into a master class in toxicity. It’s time to move on. There are better oppotunities out there, ones that will empower you to grow as a professional and impart a greater sense of self-worth.
Isn't it funny how AIG benefits are outsourced and administered to Mercer, A Marsh Company, and who used to be CEO at Marsh? Yes, you guessed it PZ. There was a duffle bag full of crisp $100's paid for that decision to outsource.
The Cobra letter would be sent as part of your benefits if you are being riffed from AIG. If you are bring transferred, no Cobra letter is necessary as you will be receiving the benefits from the new company.
Question for the person who wrote the post below:
"If you are being transferred over to another company, this is why you got this early in error. The other is ...yes...you are about to get riffed if no transfer."
If it's a prelude to a possible company transfer, would it be outsourcing or would the letter be required if it's a move from one AIG company to another. (GI and not related to the L&R separation.
How did a third party admin get the names of the employees to send the letter? Most likely AIG.
It was a sc--w up by B Swift our AIG benefits outsourcing something (Mercer. A Marsh Co is the administrator) so not sinister IMO. That said if my claims team treated insureds the way AIG outsource providers treat us AIG employees there would be he-l to pay.
These letters went out to many people in GI. Think about the logistics of how this could have randomly happened. Pretty sure someone would have to select individual employees to generate letters. Not sure how this could be a random mistake?
GI is prime for expense reduction and outsourcing as L/R separates and PZ looks to find a way to boost the lagging stock price. This was most likely an "oops" dry run where someone hit the send button before it was time while compiling a list of staff reductions.
Either way, a rif with a package is a blessing so if you get it celebrate and never look back.
I’m pretty sure we are being riffed and aig screwed up by sending this out early.. but hey really great quarters / 2021 numbers for AIG!! Now the 2% raises or no raise makes sense bc why would they want to give you a raise when they’re planning on cutting you off?
Ask your manager, I'm sure they will tell you that you are safe
Don't worry, AIG already said it was a mistake. AIG would never lie to you. Right? Well maybe? On second thought, AIG lies consistently so you are probably on the chopping block. Either way, it is time to move on anyway so go find a job before the unemployment line finds you.
I got the letter (and then the follow-up email) and I’m part of GI Ops and remote so no perp walk. But would really like to know if this is truly a “mistake” or am I part of a RIF and it’s gonna happen?
To the poster regarding a “timeframe”, most AIG Rifs are “blindsides” because AIG wants to perp walk you out the door after confiscating your laptop so you cannot “damage” AIG. In general, no timeframes are given.
What did the email say - did it say that the cobra notice was an error? Are you part of life and retirement?
If we can stay away for a moment from HR being incompetent and possible transfers, do you really believe that anyone who got one of these, and I did, that we’re actually on the RIF list? If so, we usually “hear” about timeframes on RIF’s and most times they’re accurate, any timeframe on this one?
If you are being transferred over to another company, this is why you got this early in error. The other is ...yes...you are about to get riffed if no transfer.
Cheers!
I am so nice they sent me it twice. Please just get it over with. I have job offers but who else will pay me to do nothing?
I'm bummed I didn't get one.
wow - that’s a pretty big sc--w-up…
Looking forward to it. Done with this place, interviewing in progress.
I do know that HR has been given the names of employees who aren’t vaccinated or haven’t signed the attestation. We had to explain why we are unable to return to the office, and to give reasons such as, religious, medical, etc. Maybe this is related?
Probably not an error...they removed access on me and others prior to layoff....they have no clue what they are doing..offshoring at its finest
Wonder if it was truly an accident or they sent it out too early.. because damn I’m on the riff list then
Unfortunately the poster below is likely right. I've heard this before. Cobra letters received prior to actual notification. The error may not be that you received it but that you received before communication. Would you mind sharing your division?
That should help with attrition….
The error was in sending the letter too early. They are supposed to wait until you are riffed.
It was an accidental test run. If you got one there is a reason.
Glad I wasn’t the only one. Is there a mass RIF planned?
