I have never turned to HR for help, because I know it would be in vain. I would like to know if HR has ever helped an employee here?

I know someone in Calgary who was on STD for valid reasons and was treated so poorly by HR that he went on LTD for so long (a vacation) just to sc--w the company over and when he returned they packaged him out. This was pre-covid and he was all over the States and Canada while on leave. Haha. Still makes me laugh. Guy had some stones. Sc--w HR and CVE.
@7nvp+1gHGwxHJ you are clearly a legacy Dawg as you don’t seem to understand how THIS company runs. HR wields an inordinate level of power here, way more than they should and way more than they have traditionally at other companies. If you think the new HR org, that basically came over from the Dawghouse didn’t recommend or put their stamp on the new bonus structure and benefits plan, you are delusional. Your statement that lower lever managers had any influence on bonus structure and benefits is laughable. This is ALL about JM rebuilding HR with his pack of Dawgs and instituting “Dawgpound law”. I invite you to also read up on our new HR hierarchy here in the Layoff…truly astounding examples of bullying and intimidation plus many claims of incompetence and cronyism. Just what we needed in a “refreshed” HR department.
I have to largely agree with @7nvp+1gHGwxHJ. HR is just an over-paid arm of the inept management of the company. They do not make hiring or firing decisions. They just get paid like they do.
Love the way you blame HR. It's your managers that make the decisions and Execs that decide on benefits. If you knew how companies actually worked you'd know that but guess that's why you're not leading company eh!
Clearly they take every opportunity to sc--w employees out of benefits including health benefits and life insurance. We can thank the new Husky HR reps for instituting their BRUTAL benefits. First they lower bonus structures and now they make us pay for our own benefits??? What happened to all of the expected attrition after the bonus payouts? Might be time to jump ship if they are going to continue screwing employees at every opportunity!!!
Just do yourself a favour use this place as a stepping stone as soon as you find something just a smidge better jam out cause they could honestly care less about you , they are using you , use them
The lowest form of life at Cenovus is the HR business partner.
HR is a cream gig. Very little accountability and little to no day-to-day pressure. Floating by putting in minimal effort while having job security for life. Get to bring out the inner high school bully with people who are sometimes at the lowest points of their lives and be rewarded for it. Then strap on the knee pads when interacting with people in positions of power... Go home and drink a bottle of wine. Rinse and repeat. The post below about how talentless people flock to HR is true.
I have worked in the head office for a few large public companies and most HR groups are very supportive and present for employees and team leads.
Not so at Cenovus. The merger was a complete failure for many groups as HR was not present and showed absolutely zero leadership.
After the merger, a token HR rep would sometimes stop by, say something obvious that’s already been posted on the company website, and offers nothing of support when employees are drowning and struggling under the workload and broken post merger structure. This contributed to many good people leaving for other jobs.
What really gets me is the lack of accountability for HR.
They don’t get laid off and usually hire right after each lay off round. Shameful .
There is something about a person who is attracted to the "Human" Resources field. People who, in my opinion, crave drama/gossip, and enjoy having the feeling of power and authority over people (hiring, warnings, terminations). HR is not your friend and its a great opportunity to remind everyone to get everything with them in writing. If you talk to them in person, record it on your phone. Download a recording app on your cell if speaking over the phone. Alberta and Canada are one consent jurisdictions, so as long as you consent you are good, and there is nothing they can do about it. The only thing HR has ever done for me was 'participate' in my interview and accept my offer paperwork (which was likely offloaded to an admin). Those with no talent flock to HR.
