Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Parallel Sysplex

In computing, a Parallel Sysplex is a cluster of IBM mainframes acting together as a single system image with z/OS. Used for disaster recovery, Parallel Sysplex combines data sharing and parallel computing to allow a cluster of up to 32 systems to share a workload for high performance and high availability.

// Sysplex is one of the primary reason that Z systems could be used to "milk" our clients in a big way (causing them to look elsewhere for their IT needs).

A small point: the OP mention Disaster Recovery and that is NOT a benefit of Parallel Sysplex in itself. More is needed and if we are talking automated recovery then GDPS automation is a solid soltion.

I bet the majority of IBMers (including management) do NOT have a clue as to what a jewel this platform is (or was?). Not a clue ... because if they realized the tremendous value of the Z platform they would have developed this platform much more including aligning the price with other competing platforms over time.

Would IBM have done so we would IMHO now be the size of Google, Amazon and Microsoft.

Just an rearview observation from my couch after having retired some years ago.

In other news IBM Services will refactor your mainframe application and break it into a series of microservices and run it on AWS Cloud in Kubernetes further eroding IBM future revenue.

Sysplexes are a very cool technology in the Z world. But here’s the thing: nobody cares any more. Sure there are a bunch of customers that keep paying for mainframes (until they are eventually “modernized”) but there’s no growth there. The future is microservices running on commodity cloud computing.

Remember: technology can be cool without being something anyone else cares about using

We left mainframes 10 years ago and joined the open system world. We don't need all that expensive bullsh1t hardware anymore

Not sure why the OP posted this on a layoff site, but this is one of the hardware/software solutions that has kept the lights on at IBM. Big commercial and government accounts. Lots of A, B. C, and D data centers.....
