Thread regarding Nordstrom layoffs

Web store fulfillment

Why is order fulfillment so pokey in the web store? Site looks good, I noticed recent changes, Nordstrom is not letting the carpets get too worn, and the LAF are good.

So I ordered something, something nice. Right away I get a confirmation email:

"Your Nordstrom order #12345678. You'll be getting more updates soon!"

Two days later, no emails, order status online is "PREPARING TO SHIP". I don't really care, the item will get here eventually, I'm not a fast-twitch millennial sperg, but why the delay? What takes two days? I'm worried about the company, not my order. The bar has been raised by the competition.

Didn't Nordstrom hire a fancypants ex-AMZN fulfillment-guru gurl into a management position $$$ to fix problems exactly like this? Why is the company still struggling with basic web order fulfillment? What is hard about my order? Are you trying to fulfill it from store 002?

After all these years of "digital transformation", where are the gaps left in the big machine? Hasn't Nordstrom put a lot of effort into streamlining order fulfillment?

Why has your fulfillment gurl forsaken me?

(As I write this, I receive a promotional email from none other than SEARS. Time to buy yard/lawn equipment, they say. How is their digital transformation going these days?)

Is Yantra still running? I thought it was to be retired. In-house per KF’s original vision (although I’m certain we would have botched it). He was right, though.

OnTrac says my order should arrive today. In the interim since I placed it, I ordered and received two things off eBay and a book from Abebooks.

Way to go, Nordstrom! Good job on the logistics.

Kaizen is a Japanese term meaning "change for the better" or "continuous improvement." It is a Japanese business philosophy regarding the processes that continuously improve operations and involve all employees. Kaizen sees improvement in productivity as a gradual and methodical process.

The Kaizen approach consists of 5 founding elements :
teamwork,
personal discipline,
improved morale,
quality circles,
suggestions for improvement.

We did NOT embrace ANY of this in our urgent discussions of kaizen...

Kaizen is about making small incremental improvements that lead to overall greater improvements -- our group whiteborded our process and looked for steps we could eliminate and determined there were none as all were necessary so kaizen discussion ended.
Meanwhile we embraced 5-15 year old software, hardware, processes and procedures.
God forbid we try to reach across to different groups to try and jointly change procedures for the greater good, but we did get a new espresso machine though!

Interesting. The item is fulfilled from the Riverside, CA, FC, so it either sat there for three days (labor shortages?) or it bounced around in the order management/ routing systems for a while.

If Kaizen isn’t about knowing and eliminating the 7 wastes, then, please, by all means help me to understand it.

As someone who worked in their fulfillment department, a lot of the online orders go to the actual stores where a team picks them, rather than a distribution center. 75% of the time, the inventory is messed up. If we couldn't find the item, the order would bounce from store to store until it is found or rejected. Also, the operations departments (stock, fulfillment) are paid DIRT wages and haven't had any sort of raise in over 5 years, so the quality of workers is greatly lacking.

"Eliminate the seven wastes!"

So it appears that kaizen was completely misinterpreted in your group too... surprised not surprised.

Ship confirm email received tonight. OK. So why did this take 3.5 days just to process a single item order? You have the carrier, actual delivery, but the time to pick and pack the item will be comparable.

My case is probably a good one to troubleshoot online store fulfillment at Nordstrom.

As your lawyer I advise you to apply Kaizen to all aspects of this transaction. Eliminate the seven wastes!

Looking forward to receiving the item, it looks stylish and cozy.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention in my thread that company executive who was really fine some twenty years ago.

In the meantime, I wait for an order update. Somewhere a batch job is quietly starting up, like Mother on the “Nostromo”, and thinking of me.

Day 3 of “preparing to ship”.
Couldn’t ask for an easier order.
I’ve been gone for years.
What is going on at Nordstrom these days?
Is this some flavor of BOPUS that requires human interaction, and my order is idling in a store queue somewhere waiting to be picked?
Why is this hard?
A rare fluke, or bad process engineering in order management?
Will the logistics guru gurl director pick, pack, and ship my actual order?
An eBay vendor of old forgotten maps has a higher-touch, faster, more satisfying customer experience.

Who cares about my Nordy order, I’m worried about the company. I wouldn’t complain so much, except that this is supposed to be the focus and future of Nordstrom.

What a strange mess.

Should have clarified that those two orders had issued tracking #s but UPS said 'awaiting package' for days until the tracking showed the package had been received in Eugene. No word whatsoever until that moment, and I had to check every day for the update on UPS site myself.

The last couple of times I ordered from nordstrom to my home in Seattle it seemed like the item went by courier or something from Cedar Rapids to Eugene OR UPS and once UPS had the package I got it the next day. Once it took 7 days and once it took 4.
(one of those times was also a completely wrong order)

5 minutes ago I ordered an old map off eBay. The order alerted the owner who took a minute to make sure he had it, and he confirmed the sale. It will likely ship tonight with a USPS tracking number so I can follow it from home.

Pick, pack, and ship. Instant response.

Great customer service!

So where’s my Nordy order?

What the heck is going on there these days? Are tampons in the mens room your priority for logistics?

Sales are the truth!
